About North Wales
I finally made it to Pool View Lodge near Llandinam after a bit of a faff on the A470. Picture this: I'm trundling along in my trusty old Fiesta, windows down, humming along to some BBC Radio Wales, when I spot a sheep sauntering across the road like it owns the place. I brake just in time, but not before clipping the verge and getting a puncture. Classic me—always turning a scenic drive into an unplanned adventure. A quick call to the AA, and 45 minutes later, I'm back on track, arriving at the lodge just as the sun dipped behind the Cambrian hills, casting that golden glow over the fishing lake.

Pulling up to Pool View Lodge, I was chuffed to bits. It's this cosy hot tub lodge tucked right on the edge of a serene lake, with Llyn Clywedog shimmering nearby—proper North Wales magic. The wooden deck overlooks the water, and there's a cheeky hot tub bubbling away, begging for a dip. But honestly, it was the locals who turned my first impressions into pure gold. No sooner had I lugged my bags in and cracked open a cuppa, than Dai the fisherman wandered over from his boat moored by the lake's edge.

Dai's a proper character—leather-faced from years on the water, with a flat cap perched at a jaunty angle and a beard that could hide a pasty. "Alright there, lad? You the new 'un in Pool View?" he bellowed, eyeing my number plate. I nodded, and before I knew it, he was regaling me with tales of monster pike lurking in the depths. "Caught one this big last week," he said, arms stretching wider than believable, "but it slipped me line—probably off to your hot tub for a spa day!" We chuckled over that, him puffing on a roll-up while I sipped my tea. Dai's lived here all his life, knows every ripple in the lake, and swore the best bait's worms from the garden behind the lodges. "None of your fancy shop stuff," he winked. His passion for the place was infectious; made me feel like I'd stumbled into a slice of real Wales.

Then there was Mrs. Evans from the nearby farm—short, stout, with rosy cheeks and a laugh like a foghorn. She popped by with a basket of fresh eggs, "for the city boy," she teased, spotting my London plates. We got chatting on the deck as the mist rolled in off the water. "This lake's seen more drama than Corrie," she said, launching into a yarn about the time a herd of her cows decided to go for a swim during a dry spell. "Had to row out with a bucket of feed—never again!" Her eyes twinkled with mischief, and she shared tips on spotting otters at dusk from my very deck. "Quiet now, mind—they're shy buggers." It was one of those chats that makes you reflect: here I am, rushing through life back home, and these folks just take it slow, savouring the quirks of their patch.

As evening fell, I bumped into young Tom, the lodge handyman, tinkering with a barbecue pit nearby. Barely out of his teens, with a mop of curly hair and a tool belt slung low, he was full of cheeky banter. "Hot tub working a treat? Don't go filling it with ale like the last lot—frothy disaster!" We swapped stories; he's mad on mountain biking the trails around the Clywedog reservoir, just a stone's throw away. "Race you tomorrow?" he grinned. His energy was a tonic after my puncture palaver.

That first evening, bubbling in the hot tub with a beer, gazing at the star-speckled sky, I couldn't stop smiling. The lodge was spot-on—cosy inside with its wood burner flickering, kitchen kitted out for lazy brekkies—but it was Dai's tall tales, Mrs. Evans' eggs, and Tom's banter that hooked me. North Wales locals like them make a place feel like home from the off. Selfishly, I wondered if I could bottle that warmth and take it back to the grind. Here's to more mishaps if they lead here.
