About North Wales
Pulling up just before teatime on day one, I was knackered from the M4 crawl, but the first person I met was Dai, the cheery caretaker with a beard like a Brillo pad and a handshake that could crush walnuts. “Bach Bach!” he bellowed in that thick Ceredigion accent, slapping me on the back. “You the London lad? Come for the spa, eh? Don’t worry, the hot tub’s hotter than my mam’s vindaloo.” He showed me round the lodge – pristine open-plan living with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the bay’s twinkling waves, a kitchen kitted out like a telly chef’s dream, and that spa nook with its bubbling jacuzzi and sauna whispering relaxation. Dai lingered, eyes twinkling. “Seen dolphins out there this morning, I have. Proper acrobats, flipping like they’re in the circus. You bring binoculars?” I hadn’t, of course, but his enthusiasm was infectious, turning my arrival into a chat about local wildlife lore. “Mark my words,” he winked, “they’ll put on a show just for you.” No sooner had Dai trundled off in his battered Land Rover than Mrs. Evans from next door popped over with a Tupperware of bara brith. She’s a wiry septuagenarian with rollers in her hair and a laugh like a foghorn, straight out of a Dylan Thomas play. “Welcome, cariad! Heard the car spluttering up the hill – thought you’d need cake after that.” How she knew about my farm fiasco, I’ll never tell, but over tea on the lodge’s deck, she regaled me with tales of Aberystwyth’s eccentrics. “There’s old Gwilym down by the harbour,” she cackled, “fishes with a homemade rod from tractor parts. Caught a shark once – or so he says. Probably a haddock with ideas above its station.” Her stories painted the bay as a stage for characters straight from a Ealing comedy: the fisherman who talks to seagulls, the café owner who brews tea strong enough to strip paint. I was hooked, forgetting the drive’s stress as the sun dipped into the sea. That evening, sinking into the hot tub with a pint of local Brains, I met Tommo, the young surfer bloke from the beach huts below. He’d wandered up, board under arm, salt-crusted and grinning like a kid at Christmas. “Alright mate? Saw your comedy entrance earlier – classic townie move!” We bonded over the waves – he swore the bay’s swells were “pure magic” at dawn, better than Cornwall, and shared conspiracy theories about the pier’s ghostly lights. “It’s the mermaids, see? Keeping an eye on us lot.” His passion for the coast, mixed with that deadpan Welsh wit, had me in stitches. “You staying three days? Don’t miss the chippy on Pier Street – chips so good, they’ll make you forget London exists.” As I gazed out from the lodge’s spa, bubbles massaging my shoulders, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Here I was, city boy turned accidental mud-magnet, surrounded by these larger-than-life locals who’d turned a simple arrival into a tapestry of yarns and warmth. In the rush of life back home, I’d forgotten how characters like Dai, Mrs. Evans, and Tommo make a place sing. Platinum Lodge wasn’t just a stay – it was a front-row seat to North Wales’ quirky soul, and I was already dreading leaving it behind. |
