About North Wales
Pulling up to the lodge that Friday afternoon felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked right on the edge of the lake in this quiet North Wales spot, Ox Leason Lake View is one of those cosy wooden retreats that screams "put your feet up and forget the world." The owner, a cheery local chap, handed over the keys with a nod to the best pub within walking distance – under a mile away, thank goodness, after my earlier escapade. I lugged my bag inside, kicked off my boots, and proper sighed. The open-plan living space was all warm wood panelling, a cracking wood-burner (already stocked, bless 'em), and those massive windows framing the lake like a live painting. Ducks pottered about on the water, and beyond, the gentle Welsh hills rolled off into the mist. First impressions? Pure bliss. No grand adventures planned; this was about doing sod all, and loving every minute. I dumped my stuff and headed straight for the decked terrace – or garden, as us Brits call it – with a cuppa in hand. The sun was doing its best impression of summer, glinting off the lake, and I plonked myself in one of the cushy loungers with a dog-eared paperback. Hours vanished. A breeze rustled the trees, birds cheeped, and the only interruption was a family of swans gliding past like they owned the place. Light humour in the form of me spilling biscuit crumbs and pretending it was "rustic seasoning" for my tea. By dusk, I'd barely moved, just watching the sky turn pink and purple, feeling the knot in my shoulders unravel. Supper was a lazy rummage through my cool bag – cheese on toast, elevated by the view – eaten right there as the stars winked on. Saturday morning? More of the same, and I wasn't complaining. Woke to birdsong filtering through the bedroom skylight, brewed coffee in the well-kitted kitchen (proper filter machine, none of your instant nonsense), and shuffled back to the sofa with a blanket. Reading turned into dozing, which turned into staring at the lake again. It's funny how, in the rush of everyday life, you forget how good it feels to switch off. No emails pinging, no deadlines lurking – just the tick of the clock and the lap of water on the shore. Mid-morning, I fancied a gentle wander, so I ambled along the lakeside path, no more than a couple of miles round, spotting herons and chatting to a dog-walker who reckoned the nearby tearoom did the best Welsh cakes. Picked up a flapjack there, sticky and perfect, then back to the lodge for... you guessed it, more lounging. The garden felt like my private kingdom – hammock swaying, wildflowers buzzing with bees, and that unbeatable sense of space without isolation. By Sunday, as I packed up reluctantly, I had a proper moment of self-reflection over my last brew on the terrace. Work's been manic lately, always chasing the next thing, but here, achieving nowt felt like the biggest win. Ox Leason Lake View isn't about ticking boxes or Instagram flexes; it's a gentle nudge to slow down, breathe, and let North Wales work its quiet magic. If you're after a three-day reset where the highlight is a nap with a view, this is your spot. I drove off humming, already plotting a return – minus the sheep detour next time. |
