About North Wales
I finally made it to Ottawa Lodge near Llangollen after what felt like the scenic drive from hell – or at least from the M54, which in North Wales terms is basically next door. Picture this: me, solo traveller with a boot crammed full of Welsh cakes, hiking boots, and enough waterproofs to kit out the Welsh rugby team. I'd set off from Shropshire bright and early, humming along to some dodgy Spotify playlist of Tom Jones classics, convinced I'd breeze into Denbighshire by noon. But no, the universe had other plans. About ten miles out from Llangollen, my sat-nav decided to throw a proper wobbly. "Recalculating," it chirped cheerily, before directing me down a single-track lane that wouldn't have looked out of place in a horror film. Sheep everywhere, a rogue tractor blocking the way, and me reversing like a learner driver with a herd nipping at my heels. I ended up with a sheep-sized dent in my dignity and a grazed wing mirror after clipping a drystone wall. Classic me – turning a 45-minute jaunt into a two-hour farce.

By the time I crested the hill and spotted the lodge nestled in that lush Dee Valley spot, I was frazzled, sweaty, and muttering about trading my car for a donkey. But blimey, what a sight. Ottawa Lodge popped into view like something out of a postcard – a cosy wooden cabin straight from a storybook, perched with killer views over the River Dee snaking below. It's one of those pet-friendly spots on the edge of town, just a hop from Llangollen's buzz but far enough to feel like your own private slice of Wales. I parked up (carefully this time), grabbed my bags, and fumbled the key code with hands still shaking from the sheep apocalypse. The door swung open, and honestly, it was like the chaos evaporated.

Stepping inside, I was hit with that instant "ahh" feeling – you know, when a place just hugs you? The open-plan living space is proper inviting: squishy sofas in front of a wood-burning stove (already stocked with logs, thank the lord), a kitchen that screamed "whip up a full Welsh breakfast" with its shiny hob and that massive farmhouse table. I dumped my stuff and beelined for the French doors – floor-to-ceiling glass framing the garden that rolls right down towards the valley. Birds chirping, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and in the distance, the steam trains of the Llangollen Railway puffing along like they owned the place. I cracked open a window, and the air smelled of damp earth and heather – pure North Wales magic. Laughed to myself thinking how I'd survived the morning's madness for this.

First impressions? Spot on. The bedrooms are gems – mine had a king-sized bed piled high with fluffy pillows, and an en-suite that was more spa than shed, with a rainfall shower that rinsed away the drive's stress in seconds. I flopped onto the bed for a mo, staring at the beamed ceiling, and had one of those gentle "what am I doing with my life?" moments. Work back home feels a million miles away; here I am, mid-forties, rediscovering how to just breathe. No deadlines, no emails – just me, a cuppa, and the sound of the river rushing below.

Wandered out to the deck for a proper gander. Sun dipping low, casting gold over the hills, and I could hear the faint hum of Llangollen below – bridges, canals, maybe a horse-drawn barge chugging past. It's mad how close it all is: a ten-minute stroll to town for a pint at the Corn Mill or a browse in the independent shops, but up here feels worlds apart. Spotted a red kite wheeling overhead – nature's own air show. Chuckled remembering my mirror mishap; who'd have thought a daft drive would lead to this little haven? Ottawa Lodge isn't flashy, but it's got heart – warm, welcoming, and whispering "stay forever." Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, this first glimpse has me hooked.
