I’ll never forget the drive up to Manor Farm Lodges in North Wales – a proper faff from the off. I’d set off from Shrewsbury early doors, aiming for that classic three-day jaunt to recharge in the Welsh countryside, sat-nav pinging with promises of rolling hills and peace. But no, about 20 minutes in, I managed to spill my entire builder’s tea across the passenger seat. Mug tipped right over during a sneaky roundabout manoeuvre near Welshpool, soaking my roadmap (yes, I still use one) and turning the car into a soggy sauna. “Brilliant start, you muppet,” I muttered, dabbing at it with a service station napkin while the A483 wound its way towards Newtown. By the time I hit the Powys backroads, I was knackered, sticky, and questioning my life choices – why didn’t I just stay home with Netflix?

Pulling into the drive at Red Kite Lodge around teatime felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. The place is tucked away in this idyllic farm spot just outside Newtown, surrounded by those lush green fields that scream proper Wales. No sprawling estates here – it’s cosy, rural bliss, the kind of lodge that looks like it’s been plucked from a postcard. I parked up on the gravel (crunching satisfyingly under the tyres), grabbed my drenched bag, and there it was: this gorgeous wooden lodge with its pitched roof and those big windows begging for a nosey. The sign for Manor Farm Lodges swung gently in the breeze, and I could already hear birdsong – none of that city racket.

Fumbling with the key safe (my hands still tea-stained), I let myself in, and blimey, it was love at first step. The open-plan living space hit me like a warm wave – plush sofas in soft greys, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and a kitchen that’s kitted out better than my own at home. I dumped my keys on the oak table, kicked off my wellies, and just stood there, grinning like an idiot. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the view: endless meadows dotted with sheep, the odd buzzard soaring overhead (fitting for Red Kite Lodge, eh?). Sun was dipping low, painting everything golden, and I felt that first proper “ahh” of holiday magic.

Wandering round, I discovered the bedrooms – two snug doubles upstairs, crisp white linens and fluffy pillows that screamed sleep-in heaven. The en-suite was spotless, power shower pummelling away the drive’s stress in seconds. Downstairs loo was equally pristine, and that patio? Accessed via French doors, it overlooks a private hot tub bubbling away invitingly. I fired it up straight away, because why not? Sat there with a cold beer from the fridge (fully stocked with local Powys ales – cheers to that), bubbles fizzing around me, watching the sunset over the hills. No neighbours in sight, just the faint low of cattle and the rustle of leaves. It was pure, unfiltered calm after my arrival cock-up.

Of course, I had a daft moment of self-reflection bubbling up as I soaked. There I was, 40-something and still spilling tea like a toddler, yet here in this cracking little lodge, everything else melted away. Life’s too short for mishaps to ruin the good bits, innit? First impressions? Red Kite Lodge nailed it – chaotic arrival be damned, it’s the antidote to everyday madness. If you’re after a North Wales gem that feels like home but better, this is it. Can’t wait to go back.
