About North Wales
Pulling up to Mallard VIP near Craven Arms felt like stumbling into a hug from the Welsh countryside. It’s one of those posh shepherd’s huts tucked away in a peaceful spot, all glammed up with VIP touches – think underfloor heating (bliss on a chilly autumn morn), a cracking hot tub, and a veranda begging for mugs of tea with a view. But oh, the season! October had painted everything in that painterly glow: copper beeches rustling in the breeze, bracken turning fiery on the nearby hills, and a low sun casting long shadows over the fields. First impressions? Pure magic. I stepped out, crisp air nipping at my cheeks, and inhaled that earthy, damp scent of fallen leaves – the kind that screams ‘cosy nights in’ after a bracing day out. Unpacking was a doddle, but the hut itself? What a treat. Inside, it’s compact luxury: a kingsize bed piled high with fluffy quilts (essential when frost starts kissing the grass by dawn), a telly for rainy afternoons (and boy, did we get a few showers), and a kitchenette stocked for fry-ups. I lit the wood burner straight away – crackling flames chasing off the autumn chill – and cracked open a bottle of red while watching the mist roll in from the Shropshire Hills, just a stone’s throw away. The seasonal shift made it all the more special; summer might bring barbecues, but autumn turns a stay like this into a fireside haven, where the world outside slows to a rustle of leaves. That first afternoon, I wandered the immediate grounds, boots squelching in the leaf mulch. Rabbits scarpered across dew-kissed lawns, and the air hummed with that post-harvest quiet – no midges, just the odd blackberry bush still clinging to its tart jewels. I nipped over to the shared games room (ping pong, anyone?), but honestly, who needs it when the hut’s veranda overlooks valleys bathed in that golden hour light? The hot tub called next – steaming away under a canopy of turning oaks, bubbles popping as rain pattered down. Slipping in felt like cheating winter; the contrast of icy air on my face and toasty water below was pure autumnal poetry. I chuckled thinking how I’d have melted in summer heat, but this time of year? Perfection. As dusk fell early – proper early, like 5pm torchlight – I reflected gently on why I’d picked this getaway. Life’s been a whirl lately, deadlines piling up like autumn leaves, and arriving here hit me with a soft reminder: sometimes, you just need to let the season slow you down. Mallard VIP’s first impressions wrapped me in that North Wales welcome – unpretentious, warming, and utterly shaped by October’s embrace. Three days stretched ahead, but that arrival? It set the tone for a holiday I won’t forget. |
