About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to Lodge 3 Vip Pets near Oswestry in North Wales – a proper faff from the start. I’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army (mainly crisps and pork scratchings, because who needs veg on holiday?), but about 20 minutes in, I realised I’d left my phone charger at home. Typical me, always one step behind my own chaos. No bother, though – it forced me to switch off the sat-nav and just follow the signs towards the Shropshire-Wales border, letting the rolling hills and drystone walls guide me instead. That insignificant mishap turned into the best decision of the trip, because it led me straight into some proper hidden gems I’d never have found otherwise.

Pulling up to Lodge 3 after a couple of hours, I was knackered but buzzing. Tucked away in a quiet rural spot just outside Oswestry, it’s one of those dog-friendly lodges that feels like a cosy hug after a long drive. My two mutts, Rufus and Bella, went mental, tails wagging like windscreen wipers as they sniffed out the grassy patch right by the decking. First impressions? Spot on. The place is compact but lush – think wooden beams, a cracking wood-burning stove (didn’t light it yet, but it screamed “cosy nights ahead”), and a veranda perfect for a brew while watching the sun dip behind the Welsh hills. It’s got that VIP pet vibe without being flashy; there’s even a little enclosed run for the dogs so they don’t nick your sausages. I dumped the bags, cracked open a can of lager from the fridge, and flopped onto the squishy sofa, grinning like an idiot. “This is it,” I thought, “proper getaway material.”

But here’s the magic: staying put for two seconds wasn’t an option. With no charger nagging at me, I grabbed the dogs’ leads and wandered off down a unmarked lane I spotted snaking behind the lodge. No maps, no plans – just the thrill of getting lost in North Wales’ back-of-beyond. Within five minutes, I stumbled on this wee hidden gem: a babbling brook tucked in a wooded dip, probably part of the nearby River Tanat’s lesser-known tributaries. Crystal-clear water rushing over mossy stones, wildflowers poking through everywhere, and not a soul in sight. Rufus splashed about like a furry torpedo while Bella sunbathed on a flat rock. I sat there with a cuppa from my thermos, chuckling at how I’d accidentally found a spot that felt like my own private Eden. Who needs TripAdvisor when a wrong turn delivers this?

Emboldened, I pushed on, veering left at a faded footpath sign half-hidden by brambles. That led to another off-the-beaten-track treasure: an old packhorse bridge, arched and ancient, spanning a narrow valley just a couple of fields from the lodge. Locals might know it, but it’s not on any tourist radar – perfect for a daft photo of me pretending to be a medieval knight, dogs as my squires. The air was thick with that earthy Welsh scent, bees humming lazily, and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself. Here I was, a city lad from Birmingham, faffing about like an explorer in my wellies, when really I’d just nipped out for a piss and a stretch. Light humour in the absurdity, innit?

As the afternoon wore on, I looped back via a sneaky wild garlic grove – proper pungent, made mental mental notes to forage some tomorrow for a fry-up. First day at Lodge 3, and already it was all about these accidental discoveries: the quiet thrill of paths untrodden, the joy of letting the landscape lead. It got me reflecting, gentle-like, over a sausage sizzle on the deck that evening. Life’s too short for sticking to the main roads; sometimes the best bits are just a wander away, hidden for those daft enough to get lost. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s mishaps unearth.
