About North Wales
Pulling up to Llety Cariad just before teatime, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Montgomery – proper Powys countryside, with those rolling green hills that make you breathe easier – this little lodge felt like a hug from an old mate. It's one of those cosy self-catering spots, dog-friendly too (we left Rufus at home this time, gutted), with a veranda that screams "put your feet up." The owner, a cheery local lass, had left fresh milk and biscuits on the side – proper thoughtful touch. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the kids immediately legged it to the garden, whooping about the space to run riot without nosy neighbours. First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on for our relaxed family vibe. Stepping inside, the open-plan living area hit you with that warm, lived-in feel – woodburner ready for a chill evening (though we didn't need it with the late summer sun), a squishy sofa begging for Netflix binges, and a kitchen kitted out just right for whipping up spag bol without faffing about. The bedrooms were snug as a bug; ours had this massive window framing the fields, and the kids' room had bunks they claimed faster than you can say "shotgun top." I plonked my bag down and thought, yeah, this is the antidote to the daily grind. We cracked on with settling in amid the usual lodge life chaos. The little 'uns unpacked by tipping toys across the floor – Lego bricks underfoot are the real holiday hazard – while I faffed with the kettle. Cuppa in hand, we fired up the BBQ on the patio (it came with one, thank goodness), grilling sausages and chucking on some corn. The air smelled of woodsmoke and cut grass, and as the sun dipped behind the hills, those simple pleasures washed over us. No itinerary, no rush – just us lot, plates balanced on knees, laughing about that sheep standoff. The kids spotted a rabbit hopping about in the twilight, which sparked a half-hour "bunny hunt" that ended with them covered in dew and me promising hot choc. Sitting there later, feet up on the veranda with a cheeky lager, I had a proper moment of gentle reflection. Life's mad rush back home – school runs, deadlines, the lot – it all felt miles away. Here at Llety Cariad, with the stars popping out overhead and the quiet hum of the countryside, I realised these bits are what recharge the batteries. Not grand adventures, just mud-splattered mishaps and family giggles. It's the chaos that makes it magic, really. Can't wait to wake up to birdsong tomorrow and see what else this gem throws at us. If you're after a proper North Wales family breather, this is your spot. |
