About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to Little Red Heart Lake View in North Wales – a proper British summer jaunt that started with me spilling my flask of tea all over the passenger seat just past Shrewsbury. It was one of those classic early July days, the kind where the sun’s playing hide-and-seek behind fluffy clouds, teasing you with bursts of warmth before a cheeky shower reminds you it’s Wales, not the Med. Three days away with the missus, escaping the daily grind for this cosy lakeside cottage, and already I’d turned the car into a soggy shrine to Yorkshire Gold. Laughable, really – me, the self-proclaimed road trip pro, faffing about with paper towels at a layby while steam rose from the leather like a bad curry aftermath.

The satnav finally spat us out onto those narrow, winding lanes typical of north Wales, fringed with hedgerows bursting with summer foxgloves and honeysuckle. It was late afternoon by the time we trundled down the final track to the lake, the air thick with that fresh, loamy scent you only get after a morning rain. Little Red Heart Lake View sat there like a postcard – a quaint red cottage hugging the water’s edge, its stone walls glowing in the golden light, surrounded by nothing but rippling water and whispering reeds. First impressions? Blimey, it was paradise. The season had worked its magic: long days meant the sun lingered low, painting the lake in shimmering silvers and golds, while the surrounding hills of the Shropshire-Wales border stood sentinel, their peaks softened by a hazy summer heat.

We hauled our bags up the gravel path, dodging a cheeky robin that eyed us like we were intruders on its patch. Unlocking the door, that quintessential cottage smell hit us – woodsmoke from the log burner (not needed in this heat, mind), fresh linen, and a hint of lavender from the owners’ welcome hamper. The views from the lounge windows? Straight out of a dream. The lake stretched out lazily, its surface dotted with dragonflies skimming the water like tiny helicopters. Summer’s generosity was everywhere: wildflowers nodding in the breeze along the shore, buttercups carpeting the garden like nature’s own fairy lights. We cracked open a couple of cold lagers from the fridge – proper refreshment after the drive – and just sat on the patio, feet up, watching the light dance on the water. No telly, no Wi-Fi nagging at us; just the gentle lap of waves and the distant call of a buzzard.

That first evening, as the sun dipped towards the horizon in that endless July twilight, we wandered the short path around the lake’s edge. The warmth wrapped around us like a favourite jumper, but with a balmy edge that had us in shorts and tees, not the usual welly boots. Ducks quacked their hellos, and I swear I spotted a kingfisher’s blue flash – or was that the lager talking? We picnicked right there on the grass with cheese sarnies and crisps from the hamper, giggling about my tea fiasco. “You’re a right numpty,” she said, and I couldn’t argue. The season shaped it all so perfectly: those extended evenings let us linger without a care, the mild air coaxing out scents of wild mint and damp earth that felt alive, vibrant.

As night crept in, slow and reluctant, we lit a few candles inside (no need for the fire, with summer’s breath still on the windows). Cosied up on the sofa, lake view framed like a living painting, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s too short for soggy car seats and work emails, isn’t it? Here, in this unassuming spot, July’s lazy embrace stripped it all back – no rush, no plans, just the simple joy of being. First impressions don’t get much better; Little Red Heart had us hooked before we’d even unpacked the kettle. Can’t wait to return when autumn paints it gold.
