About North Wales
Pulling up to Lakeside Retreat felt like stumbling into a secret. Tucked right by the water on Anglesey, this place is a proper hidden gem, the kind you only find if your GPS throws a wobbly. The cottage is all stone walls and slate roof, with a deck peering straight over a glassy lake that mirrors the Snowdonia peaks on a clear day. No tourist coaches here—just the lap of water and the odd heron eyeing me suspiciously as I unloaded my bags. First impressions? Blissful isolation. I dumped my stuff, cracked open a tin of beans for a quick tea (holiday gourmet, that), and stepped out to breathe it all in. The air's so fresh it practically tickles your lungs. Wandering aimlessly that first afternoon was pure joy—the joy of getting properly lost without a care. I followed a faint path from the cottage that snaked along the lakeside, away from the main road. No signs, no maps, just my curiosity and a pair of wellies. It led me to this tucked-away cove where the water meets pebbly shore, fringed by wild brambles heavy with blackberries. I picked a handful, staining my fingers purple, and sat munching them while watching seals bob about in the strait—turns out you're close enough to spot them from here without joining the crowds at the usual viewpoints. Who knew? It was one of those accidental finds that makes you grin like an idiot. As the sun dipped, I pushed on, letting my feet decide. The lanes around Menai Bridge are a warren of secrets if you ignore the main drags. I ended up at a forgotten little jetty, half-swallowed by reeds, where locals must fish in peace. No Instagram hordes, just me, a thermos of tea, and the rumble of the tide under the bridge. I even spotted a kingfisher darting like a blue spark—pure fluke, but it felt like the lake was sharing its treasures. Light humour in the mishaps, mind: I slipped on some mud trying to get a closer peek, ending up arse-over-tit in a puddle. Soaked to the skin, I trudged back chuckling, thinking how my mates back home would rib me rotten. That evening, from the cottage's warmth—fire crackling, kettle on—I reflected gently on it all. In the rush of daily life, we chase the big sights, the signposted spots. But here, at Lakeside Retreat, the first day taught me the quiet thrill of the unplanned. Those off-the-beaten-track nooks, found by happy accident, remind you life's best bits hide in the detours. Getting lost isn't losing time; it's finding your rhythm. Can't wait for day two's wanders. |
