About North Wales
I finally made it to Kings Lodge after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Shropshire. I'd set off bright and early, fancying a smooth run into North Wales, but about 20 miles out, I managed to take a wrong turn onto some narrow country lane that looked promising on the satnav but turned out to be a dead end at a muddy farm gate. There I was, reversing my little hatchback with all the grace of a drunk hedgehog, splattering muck everywhere. Laughed at myself the whole way back to the main road – classic me, turning a 90-minute journey into a two-hour comedy sketch. But honestly, it was the perfect opener for what turned out to be the laziest, most restorative three days imaginable.

Pulling up to Kings Lodge just before lunchtime, I was smitten straight away. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Ellesmere, it's the sort of cosy lodge that screams "switch off and chill." Picture a smart wooden cabin with those big windows letting in floods of light, surrounded by a lush garden that's basically begging you to flop into a deckchair. The owner handed over the keys with a cheery wave – no fuss, just a quick rundown of the basics – and I hauled my bag inside, already feeling the tension from work melting away.

First impressions? Blissful. The open-plan living space is spot-on for doing precisely nowt: a squishy sofa piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove (though it was a warm August day, so no need), and a kitchen that's kitted out just enough for lazy brekkies without any faff. I dumped my stuff, cracked open a cold drink from the fridge, and stepped straight out into the garden. It's private and wildish in the best way – think manicured lawns giving way to flowerbeds buzzing with bees, and a couple of bird feeders dangling from the trees. I spent the first hour just wandering about barefoot, plonking myself on the wooden bench with a book I'd been meaning to read for months. No agenda, no timetable. The sun filtered through the leaves, and all I could hear was birdsong and the distant hum of nothing much.

That first afternoon set the tone perfectly. After a rummage in the kitchen for cheese on toast – proper comfort food – I sprawled on the sofa with my novel, feet up, letting the world outside fade. The lodge has this lovely decked area right off the living room, so I migrated there with a cuppa when the shade shifted. It's the joy of these places: everything's designed for lingering. No pressure to dash off anywhere. Sure, Ellesmere's just a short stroll away – maybe a ten-minute amble if you're feeling energetic – with its quaint high street, a decent bakery for fresh pasties, and the mere sparkling nearby for a gentle potter. I nipped down later that day for a loaf and some local cheddar, chatting with the chap at the counter about the weather (as you do). Back at the lodge, I sliced it up in the garden, watching the clouds drift by. Felt like proper time travel, slowing everything right down.

Evening rolled in soft and golden. I lit a few fairy lights around the deck (they're there for the magic), poured a glass of wine, and just sat. Reflected a bit then, you know? Life back home's all rush and deadlines – emails pinging at dawn, that constant itch to be productive. Here, achieving nowt felt like the biggest win. No grand adventures, no Instagram hikes up Snowdon or whatever. Just me, the lodge's cosy embrace, and the sheer luxury of bugger all. By bedtime, tucked under the fluffy duvet in a room that smelled faintly of pine, I was already plotting how to stretch this vibe out forever.

Day two dawned much the same – more reading in the garden, a lazy lunch of whatever was in the fridge, perhaps another saunter to the local shop for papers and treats. The lodge's hot tub was calling my name by afternoon (pure indulgence, bubbling away under the trees), but mostly it was about that delicious inertia. North Wales has its wild beauty on the doorstep, but from Kings Lodge, the real magic was in staying put, breathing deep, and letting the days unfold at snail's pace. Three days of this? Pure gold. If you're after a reset without the effort, this is your spot. I drove home grinning, already dreaming of the next time.
