About North Wales
Pulling up to the lodge around teatime, I was gobsmacked. Tucked right on the edge of a glassy lake in the Flintshire countryside near Mold, it's the sort of spot that doesn't scream from the brochures but whispers "stay a while." The wooden exterior blends into the surrounding woods like it's grown there, with a little private deck jutting out over the water. Kingfishers – the actual birds, mind – dart about at dawn and dusk, hence the name. I unloaded my bags, brewed a cuppa in the cosy kitchen (properly kitted out with all the mod cons), and flopped onto the sofa, staring out at the ripples. First impressions? Pure bliss. No traffic hum, just the lap of water and the odd sheep bleating in the distance. It felt like I'd nicked a slice of the Lakes District but without the coachloads of tourists. That first evening, hunger drove me out for a wander, and boy, did getting lost pay off. Instead of heading straight for Mold's high street, I veered off down a footpath signposted "Lakeside Trail" – or was it "Loggerheads"? The signs were faded, but I figured it'd loop back. Spoiler: it didn't. I ended up on a winding path through ancient oak woods, the sort where sunlight filters through like fairy dust. About a mile in, I stumbled on this tucked-away waterfall, no bigger than a garden hose on steroids, but cascading into a peaty pool that begged for a paddle. No one else around – just me, the mossy rocks, and a cheeky robin giving me the eye. I laughed out loud at myself, phone in hand for a rubbish selfie, thinking how I'd have missed this firing down the main road. The next morning, still buzzing from that discovery, I grabbed my wellies for more aimless exploring. A "wrong" turn off the lane from the lodge led me to a forgotten picnic spot by the River Alyn, where the water gurgles over smooth stones perfect for skimmed pebbles. It's one of those off-the-beaten-track havens locals probably keep schtum about – wild garlic carpeting the banks in spring, butterflies flitting about, and not a soul in sight. I sat there with a flask of coffee, chuckling at how my rubbish sense of direction had turned into a superpower. Who needs TripAdvisor when serendipity's your guide? By day three's breakfast on the deck – watching mist lift off the lake like a slow-reveal magic trick – I was hooked on this lodge's magic. That insignificant sat-nav blip on arrival? It set the tone for the whole trip: embracing the joy of getting lost in North Wales' quiet corners. It's made me reflect a bit – life's too short for sticking to the script. Sometimes, the best finds are the ones you weren't looking for, right there on your doorstep at Kingfisher Lakeside Lodge. If you're after a peaceful escape where hidden gems unfold by happy accident, this is your spot. I'm already plotting a return. |
