About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive to Ivy Tree Lodge in North Wales last autumn – that crisp October weekend when the leaves were turning gold and the air had that proper bite to it, making you glad you’d packed an extra jumper. I’d set off from mid-Wales early, hoping to beat the traffic, but wouldn’t you know it, about halfway there, I had a right faff with the sat-nav. It decided to chuck a complete wobbly, sending me down a muddy farm track instead of the A-road. There I was, sliding around like a novice rally driver, cursing under my breath as pheasants scarpered out of the hedges. A good 20 minutes later, after a three-point turn that would’ve made my driving instructor weep, I was back on track, laughing at my own daftness. Autumn mishaps, eh? They’re character-building.

Finally rolling up to Ivy Tree Lodge near Llandinam in Powys around teatime, the seasonal magic hit me like a warm hug. The sun was dipping low, painting the rolling hills in fiery oranges and reds – proper North Wales autumn at its best, with the Clwyedog Valley looking like a postcard from a bygone era. The lodge itself is this cosy little gem, tucked away in a peaceful spot just off the beaten path, surrounded by woods that were shedding leaves like confetti. I parked up on the gravel drive, crunching under the tyres, and stepped out into air that smelled of damp earth and woodsmoke. It was chilly, mind – that fresh, invigorating sort that turns your cheeks pink – but the lodge’s welcoming glow from the windows promised shelter from the gathering dusk.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. I unlocked the door with the key in the lockbox (smooth as, no faffing about), and inside, it was all homely bliss: a wood-burning stove already set with kindling, ready for a crackling fire to fend off the evening chill. The open-plan living area had these big windows framing the misty fields, where sheep dotted the landscape like fluffy commas. Autumn’s mellow light filtered in, turning everything soft and golden – the plush sofas looked perfect for sinking into with a cuppa, and the kitchen was kitted out with all the bits you need for a fry-up or a stew. I dumped my bags and immediately lit that stove; within minutes, the room was toasty, flames dancing like they were putting on a show just for me. Sat there with a brew, listening to the wind rustling the trees outside, I felt miles away from the daily grind.

Stepping out for a proper nosey around the garden as the light faded was pure seasonal poetry. The patio was carpeted in fallen leaves – copper, crimson, amber – perfect for a satisfying scrunch underfoot. There’s a hot tub out back, steaming gently even in the cooling air, and I could picture bubbling away under the stars later, with the trees whispering overhead. But it was the quiet that got me; no traffic hum, just the occasional call of a rook or the distant low of cattle. October’s shorter days meant the sun vanished quick, wrapping everything in twilight hush, but that made the lodge feel even more like a sanctuary. I nipped to the nearby farm shop – just a couple of miles down the lane – for local tatties, cheese, and a slab of bara brith, all the better for being in season when the harvests are at their peak.

Wandering the woodland path right from the door, torch in hand as proper darkness fell, was a highlight. The undergrowth was alive with that earthy, fungal scent, toadstools popping up like little autumn sentinels. It made me pause for a gentle think – here I was, mid-forties, faffing about in the woods like a kid again, reminded how these seasonal shifts pull you back to basics. No screens, no rush; just the rustle of leaves and the promise of frost come morning. Ivy Tree Lodge nailed that first-night feeling: a perfect autumn bolthole in North Wales, where the season doesn’t just set the scene – it steals the show. Can’t wait to go back when the frost sparkles.
