About North Wales
Pulling up that first afternoon, the sun was doing its best British impression—peeking out like it had somewhere better to be. The lodge is a proper gem: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, and French doors opening onto a patio that screams "morning cuppa spot." I dumped my bags, laced up my boots, and eyed the rolling fields beyond. First impressions? Blissful isolation, with not a soul in sight except a few cheeky sheep eyeing me suspiciously from the fence. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the faint rustle of leaves. Perfect for the three-day escape I'd promised myself. Keen to stretch my legs after the drive, I headed out for a wander along the nearby footpaths—those classic North Wales trails that weave through farmland and up gentle slopes towards the Offa's Dyke Path, just a stone's throw away. The weather was playing nice at first: crisp autumn air, blue skies, golden light bathing the hedges heavy with blackberries. I munched a handful (free dessert, courtesy of Mother Nature) and powered up a stile, feeling like a proper adventurer. The views! Undulating hills dotted with ancient oaks, the odd buzzard soaring overhead. Holly Lodge shrank to a toy cottage below, and I thought, "This is it, mate—this is why we do these trips." But oh, the British weather—it's got a wicked sense of humour, hasn't it? By hour two, the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, fat and grey from the west. A drizzle started, that fine misty sort that soaks you without you noticing until you're wringing out your socks. Plans for a longer hike to the Llyn Cliff Wood edges? Scrubbed. I legged it back, slipping on mud like a Bambi on ice, chuckling at how I'd packed shorts instead of waterproofs. "Amateur," I chided myself, arriving back at the lodge looking like a drowned rat. First impressions updated: Holly Lodge isn't just pretty; it's a sodding sanctuary when the skies turn biblical. Inside, I lit the stove (matches at the ready, thank goodness), brewed a builder's tea, and watched the rain lash the windows. It hammered down proper then—gusts rattling the panes, turning the patio into a paddling pool. Cosy as anything, though. I reflected a bit, feet up on the sofa, on how these mishaps make the best stories. That pigeon splat? A comedy opener. The weather flip? A reminder not to take the sun for granted. Instead of sulking, I plotted tomorrow's adventures: shorter loops around the local meadows when the clouds part, maybe a dawn stroll if the forecast holds. North Wales doesn't do predictable, and neither do I, apparently. Evening fell with the rain easing to a soft patter. Supper was beans on toast—elevated by the lodge's quirky crockery—and an early night, lulled by the downpour. First day in, and Holly Lodge had me hooked: hikes thwarted but spirit lifted, weather wild but welcome. Can't wait to see what the morrow brings. |
