About North Wales
I finally made it to Hillside View after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M54, via a detour that had me questioning my sat-nav's life choices. Picture this: I'm trundling along those twisty North Wales lanes near Rhayader, windows down, Radio 2 blasting some classic Oasis to get me in the holiday mood, when – splat! – a rogue pheasant decides to audition for my windscreen. Nothing dramatic, just a feathery thump and a streak of feathers that turned my pride and joy into a Jackson Pollock painting. I pulled over in a layby, heart racing more from the comedy of it than any real damage, and spent ten minutes dabbing at it with wet wipes from the glovebox. "Welcome to the countryside," I muttered to myself, chuckling at how I'd packed for relaxation but forgotten the bird strike contingency.

By the time I crested the hill towards Hillside View, the sun was dipping low, casting that golden glow over the rolling Powys hills that makes you forget minor fowl-related traumas. The cottage came into view like something out of a postcard – a cosy stone-built gem nestled on the hillside, with panoramic windows begging to frame the Elan Valley's wild beauty. I parked up on the gravel drive, gravel crunching under my tyres like a satisfying ASMR video, and hauled my bags out, already grinning at the promise of three days unplugging from London life.

Fumbling with the key safe (pro tip: always double-check the code before your hands are full of shopping bags), I stepped inside, and blimey, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living space hit me with that perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort – exposed beams overhead, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire later, and squishy leather sofas that practically hugged you as you flopped down. The kitchen was a dream: granite worktops gleaming, a proper Aga-style cooker (though electric, thank goodness – no faffing with logs for this city boy), and a Nespresso machine that winked at me like an old mate. I brewed up straight away, inhaling the rich coffee aroma mixed with the faint scent of fresh linen from the airing cupboard.

Wandering through, the bedrooms stole my heart next. Mine was upstairs with a super-king bed piled high with fluffy duvets, and those views – oh, those views! Overlooking the valley where the River Elan snakes through, with sheep dotting the fields like fluffy exclamation marks. The en-suite was spotless, rainfall shower pummelling away the drive's stresses in seconds. Downstairs, the second bedroom had twin beds for mates (next time), and a family bathroom that could've been nicked from a spa. Outside, the patio wrapped around with bistro tables and chairs, plus a hot tub bubbling invitingly under the stars. I cracked open a beer from the local Rhayader offy I'd stopped at en route – Wye Valley ale, crisp and perfect – and just sat there, feet up, watching the sunset paint the hills in pinks and purples.

That first evening, as I rustled up a simple pasta with ingredients from the nearby Elan Valley visitor centre (their farm shop is a gem, ten minutes down the road), I had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection. Staring out at the darkening landscape, I realised how knackered I'd been from the daily grind – emails piling up, tube delays, the lot. Here, with the pheasant mishap already a funny anecdote, Hillside View felt like a reset button. No signal stress, just birdsong and breeze. I laughed to myself about the bird – if that was the worst of my holiday chaos, I was winning.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. This isn't just a cottage; it's a slice of North Wales heaven, the kind that makes you vow to return before you've even unpacked properly. If you're after peace with a side of stunning vistas, Hillside View's your spot. Can't wait for day two.
