About North Wales
I finally made it to Fron Haul Robin Goch after a bit of a faff on the A55 – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn near Colwyn Bay and ending up in a queue of caravans crawling along like they were auditioning for a snail race. Typical me, innit? But honestly, as the SatNav chirped me back on track, the North Wales countryside started unfolding in that proper lush way: rolling hills dotted with sheep, dry stone walls snaking about, and that fresh, peaty air sneaking through the car window. Ruthin was only a short hop from there, and before I knew it, I was trundling down a quiet lane to this cracking little red cottage tucked away in its own slice of Denbighshire paradise.

Pulling up to Fron Haul Robin Goch – or "Red Robin Lodge" as the sign cheekily put it – felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's one of those proper Welsh cottages, all cosy stone with a vibrant red front that stands out against the green like a cheeky postbox. The owner, a lovely chap called Dai, met me at the gate with a wave and a thermos of tea, no fuss. "Take your time settling in," he said with that warm Valleys lilt. I lugged my bag up the path, past a riot of wildflowers in the garden, and stepped inside. Blimey, it was pure bliss – low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and squishy sofas piled with cushions that screamed "plonk yourself down and forget the world."

First impressions? It was love at first sight. After the drive's minor drama, I kicked off my trainers, brewed a proper cuppa in the compact kitchen (complete with that satisfying whistle from the kettle), and flopped onto the sofa with a dog-eared paperback I'd brought along. The joy of doing bugger all hit me like a warm wave. No itinerary, no alarms – just the tick of a clock and birdsong filtering through the open window. The garden was the real star: a sun-trap patio with a couple of loungers, framed by apple trees heavy with fruit and a hedge buzzing with bees. I spent that first afternoon parked there, feet up, watching clouds drift over the Clwydian hills. Lazy doesn't even cover it; it was meditative, like my brain finally clocked off after months of London hustle.

The next morning – day two of my three-day jaunt – I fancied a gentle potter to nearby Ruthin, all of five minutes down the road. Nothing strenuous, mind; just a meander through the market square with its half-timbered shops and that ace little bakery on Well Street. Grabbed a bacon cob and a flapjack, chatted with the baker about the weather (as you do), then wandered back via the castle ruins, their ancient stones glowing in the sun. No rushing – I even sat on a bench pretending to be a local, sketching wonky sheep in my notebook. Back at the cottage, it was more of the same: stove crackling, a GandT from the well-stocked honesty bar, and an evening lost in my book as dusk painted the garden gold. Pure, unadulterated sloth, and I was here for it.

By day three, that gentle self-reflection crept in while I nursed a coffee on the patio. Staring at the mist lifting off the fields, I realised how knackered I'd been without knowing it – work emails piling up, life on fast-forward. Fron Haul had me slowing right down, reminding me that joy's in the small stuff: the creak of a comfy chair, the scent of damp earth after a shower, the simple thrill of nowt on the agenda. No grand adventures needed; just this red cottage, its garden embrace, and the art of bugger all. If you're after a North Wales reset, book it – you'll thank me later.
