About North Wales
Pulling up to Eagle Lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Mold, this cosy wooden lodge is the epitome of "get away from it all." I parked on the gravel drive, grabbed my weekend bag—stuffed with books, a bottle of Malbec, and not much else—and unlocked the door. The first whiff hit me: woodsmoke from the log burner (already set, bless the hosts) mixed with fresh linen. Inside, it's all warm pine panels, squishy sofas, and a kitchen that screams "cook if you fancy, or don't." I dumped my keys on the oak table and flopped straight onto the couch, exhaling like I'd run a marathon. First impressions? Pure bliss. The lodge is compact but clever—two bedrooms done up in neutrals with fluffy duvets that practically tuck themselves in, a bathroom with a rain shower that could rinse away a week's worth of emails, and best of all, those massive windows framing the garden. Speaking of which, I stepped out the French doors into what can only be described as my new happy place. A private patio with rattan chairs, surrounded by lush borders buzzing with bees, and a hot tub bubbling away like it knew I needed it. No neighbours in sight, just birdsong and the distant bleat of those cheeky sheep. I cracked open a beer from the fridge (stocked with local goodies—cheers, Snaptrip) and just... sat. For an hour. No phone, no plans. Bliss. That first afternoon set the tone: doing bugger all, and loving every second. I wandered the garden paths at snail's pace, plonking down on a bench to watch clouds drift over the Clwydian hills. It's funny how something so simple feels revolutionary when you're wired from London life. Later, as dusk fell, I lit the log burner—easy as pie, with matches and kindling at the ready—and curled up with my book, a battered copy of "I Capture the Castle." The flames crackled, the Malbec flowed, and I chuckled at myself: here I was, a self-confessed doer, finally mastering the art of nowt. Next morning, breakfast was a lazy affair: porridge made on the induction hob, eaten al fresco while the mist lifted. No rush to tick off hikes or castles—Eagle Lodge is five minutes from Mold's high street, so I ambled down for a mooch. Popped into a quirky bookshop for a dog-eared thriller, grabbed a pasty from the bakery (proper flaky, cheese and onion heaven), and that was my "exploration" done. Back at the lodge, I fired up the hot tub, sank in with a cuppa, and let the jets knead away any lingering tension. Reading by the water's edge, toes wrinkling, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection: when did I last switch off like this? Work's a treadmill, mates are scattered, but three days here? It's recharging the soul, innit? Day two mirrored the first—garden lounging, a gentle potter to nearby Bailey Hill for views that stop you in your tracks (without breaking a sweat), and evenings lost in the glow of the burner. The joy of Eagle Lodge isn't in grand adventures; it's in the nothing. Slow sips of tea, pages turning lazily, the world shrinking to this haven. By checkout on day three, I was plotting a return, wing mirror mishap long forgotten. If you're after proper RandR in North Wales, this is your spot—cosy, quiet, and utterly restorative. |
