About North Wales
I finally made it to Caban Cariad after a bit of a faff on the drive up from the mainland. We'd crossed the Britannia Bridge onto Anglesey with the sun dipping low over the Menai Strait, but then I took a wrong turn somewhere near Holyhead—nothing dramatic, just me missing a faded signpost and ending up on a narrow lane that dead-ended at a sheep field. "Classic me," I chuckled to myself, reversing gingerly past a cluster of bemused lambs. Ten minutes later, we were there: this cosy little cabin tucked away in a quiet corner of Holyhead, surrounded by gorse bushes and the faint crash of waves in the distance. From the off, it felt like stumbling on a secret hideaway, the kind of place you'd never find unless you were a bit lost—which, let's face it, I was.

Pulling up to Caban Cariad, my first impression was pure relief mixed with that buzz of discovery. The cabin's wooden exterior blended right into the landscape, with a cheeky "Croeso" sign on the door and a picnic bench overlooking a wild patch of garden that screamed "get out and explore." Inside, it was all compact charm: a snug lounge with a wood burner (not lit yet, but promising cosy nights), a kitchenette stocked with tea towels and a proper kettle, and a bedroom window framing the sea like a painting. No posh fripperies, just solid, homely vibes—perfect for a three-day escape. We dumped our bags, cracked open a couple of local ales from a Holyhead offy, and I thought, "Right, time to get properly lost."

That first afternoon, we wandered out with no map, just following a faint coastal path that snaked behind the cabin. Holyhead's got its tourist spots, but we veered off the beaten track straight away, ducking down a unmarked track that led to a pebbly cove I'd bet most visitors miss. There it was: a hidden gem called Porth Penrhos, or something like that—no signs, just jagged rocks, turquoise water lapping at seaweed, and seals barking from a nearby outcrop. We spent hours there, skim-skimming stones and foraging for winkles (well, I tried; turns out I'm rubbish at it). The humour hit when a wave snuck up and soaked my trainers—squelching back to the cabin, I looked like a drowned rat, but it was brilliant. No crowds, no Instagram queues, just us and the wind whipping off the Irish Sea.

Next morning, bleary from a lie-in, we set off again, aiming for nowhere in particular. A wrong turn down a farm lane—another one, because why not?—took us to this off-the-grid spot: a forgotten WWII pillbox half-buried in dunes, with panoramic views over the strait. We picnicked there with cheese butties from the cabin's fridge, watching fishing boats bob about. It was one of those moments that makes you reflect gently on life's pace—back home, I'd be glued to my phone, but here, getting lost felt like the point. No signal half the time, which was a blessing. We even found a smugglers' path (or so I imagined) leading to a wildflower meadow buzzing with bees, right on the edge of Stanley Beach's quieter stretches. Plonking down on the grass, we dozed in the sun, the only sounds gulls and distant sheep.

By evening, back at Caban Cariad, brewing tea as the light faded, those accidental finds had me hooked. The cabin's magic was how it nudged you out into Anglesey's hidden corners—those wee spots within a stone's throw that reward the wanderer. No grand plans needed; just lace up your boots, embrace the detours, and let North Wales whisper its secrets. If you're after a proper getaway, get yourself lost here. You won't regret it.
