About North Wales
Pulling up to Buckingham Lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's this cracking little lodge tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Ellesmere, surrounded by its own private garden that's basically begging you to do bugger all. I parked up, hauled my bag inside, and proper exhaled. After kicking off my shoes in the cosy hallway—wooden floors creaking like they were welcoming me personally—I flopped onto the plush sofa in the open-plan living area. The place is spot on for slowing right down: big windows flooding the room with light, a wood-burning stove (unlit, mind, as it was one of those mild spring days), and a kitchen that's kitted out just enough to rustle up tea without any faff. First impressions? Blissful isolation without feeling cut off. The garden's the star—enclosed and lush, with a patio perfect for lounging, a bit of lawn for stretching your legs if you fancy, and mature shrubs giving it that proper English cottage vibe. I cracked open a cold one from the fridge, grabbed my book (some dog-eared thriller I'd been meaning to crack for months), and parked myself on one of the cushy garden chairs. No itinerary, no rush—just the buzz of bees and birdsong. It's funny how, in the rush of everyday life, you forget how good it feels to let time dribble away like that. I must've sat there for hours, flipping pages slower than usual, watching clouds amble across the sky. A magpie hopped onto the fence, cocked its head like it was judging my lack of ambition, and I laughed out loud. "Mate," I told it, "you're preaching to the converted." Wandering inside for a brew, I clocked the little touches that make it feel like home: fluffy towels in the bathroom, a telly for rainy afternoons (though who needs it with views like these?), and bedrooms upstairs that scream "sleep in till noon." Mine had a comfy double bed piled high with quilts, overlooking the garden—ideal for that first-night deep sleep after the drive. I pottered about, unpacking minimally because, let's face it, the joy here's in the doing very little. No grand hikes or tourist traps; just a gentle amble down the lane later that afternoon, nodding to a farmer on his tractor, breathing in that fresh Welsh air laced with damp earth. As the sun dipped low, painting the garden gold, I reflected on why I'd needed this. Back home, life's a treadmill—work emails pinging at all hours, mates dragging you to the pub when you'd rather veg. Here at Buckingham Lodge, on that first evening, I realised slowing down isn't lazy; it's essential. It's the simple thrill of a cuppa in the garden, losing yourself in a book, letting the world spin without you. Three days stretched ahead, but already I knew this was the perfect antidote. If you're after proper RandR in North Wales, this lodge is your spot—cosy, quiet, and utterly restorative. Can't recommend it enough. |
