About North Wales
Blossom Lodge hit me right away with its picture-perfect charm: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and those massive windows framing the rolling hills. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out for a proper gander. The air was crisp, laced with that earthy scent of damp grass and wildflowers – proper Welsh wilderness. Being just a stone's throw from the Severn Valley trails, I figured I'd kick off with a gentle wander along the nearby riverside path. The sun was peeking through, so off I went in my wellies, map app at the ready (though signal was spotty, as you'd expect). First hike was a cracker: a couple of miles along the River Severn, past babbling brooks and those ancient oak woods that make North Wales feel timeless. I spotted a heron fishing in the shallows – majestic, until it flapped off like it owned the place. The path climbed gently towards some local viewpoints, nothing too strenuous, perfect for shaking off the drive. Weather was holding up, with fluffy clouds scudding across a blue sky. I paused on a bench, munched a flapjack, and thought, "This is it, innit? Three days of this." Little did I know the British weather had other plans. By evening, as I returned to the lodge – rosy-cheeked and starving for beans on toast – the sky turned moody. A fine drizzle started, turning the garden into a misty wonderland. First impressions evolved: Blossom Lodge felt even more inviting with rain pattering on the roof. I lit the stove, cracked open a book, and watched the hills vanish into fog. Cosy as owt. Day two dawned with optimism. Blue skies again! I laced up for a longer loop, aiming for the hilltops within a few miles – those grassy slopes dotted with gorse and heather, offering panoramas over the valley. About three miles out, huffing up a steady incline, the wind picked up, whipping my hair into a right state. Laughed at myself in a puddle reflection: windswept explorer or escaped scarecrow? The views were worth it, though – endless green, dotted with farmsteads, and that vast Welsh sky. But halfway down, the heavens opened. Proper biblical rain, turning the path to mud. I sheltered under a hawthorn, soaked to the skin, cursing my optimism. No dramatic rescue needed; I squelched back, giggling at the absurdity. British weather: it's never straightforward. Back at the lodge, dripping and defeated, I peeled off layers by the Aga (what a godsend), brewed tea number four, and reflected gently. Here I was, mid-forties, chasing hikes like a kid on half-term, only to be humbled by a shower. It's these moments that remind you life's not about flawless plans, but rolling with the squalls. The lodge wrapped me in warmth, its nooks perfect for drying boots and souls alike. Day three teased with patchy sun, so I stuck local: a shorter riverside ramble, dodging puddles and marvelling at rain-swollen streams. Weather flipped from drizzle to gleam like a cheeky barmaid switching moods. Each shift forced adaptation – longer strides through mud, pauses under trees – but that's the joy of North Wales walking. Blossom Lodge stood as my anchor, its first impressions deepening with every soggy return: a haven amid the whims of the hills. Honestly, those three days were a whirlwind of weather-whipped walks, and I wouldn't swap 'em. If you're after a spot to let the elements surprise you, this is your place. |
