About North Wales
I finally made it to Birches Lodge in Llangollen after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from Chester, where we'd nipped off the motorway for a cheeky pasty that turned out to be more glue than gravy. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads, ages 8 and 10, crammed into the car with crisps crumbling everywhere and the satnav cheerfully announcing we'd added 20 minutes thanks to a rogue tractor trundling along the A5 like it owned the place. "Dad, are we there yet?" piped up little Ollie for the 47th time, just as we crested the hill and spotted the River Dee snaking below, all silvery in the late afternoon sun. Mishap sorted, we were buzzing.

Pulling up to Birches Lodge just off the main drag in Llangollen was like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's this cosy wooden lodge tucked behind a row of classic stone cottages, with a gravel drive that crunched under our tyres like we'd arrived at our own private woodland hideaway. No grand entrance, mind – just a little porch piled with wellies that weren't ours, and a key in a lockbox that took me three goes to figure out because my fingers were sausage-like from gripping the wheel. The door swung open to that instant hit of pine and fresh linen, the kind that screams "relax, you've earned this".

Stepping inside, it was pure family chaos heaven. The open-plan living room-kitchen combo is compact but clever, with a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (genius touch) and squishy sofas that practically swallowed us whole. I flopped down first, lads diving in after, remote in hand for the telly while Sarah unpacked the cool bag. "Right, brew time," I declared, fumbling with the kettle like a proper numpty – turns out it's one of those fancy ones with a filter, and I nearly flooded the worktop. Laughter echoed off the beamed ceiling as we sorted it, the windows framing that unbeatable view of the horses grazing in the field next door. Simple pleasures, eh? A cuppa in hand, watching the world go by without a care.

First impressions? It felt like the lodge was made for us lot – hot tub bubbling away on the private patio (we'd clock that later), a telly bigger than our lounge one back home, and enough board games in the cupboard to keep the boys entertained till teatime. We rustled up beans on toast because, jet-lagged from our epic 90-minute drive, gourmet was off the menu. Sat round the oak table, steam rising, Ollie declared it "the best holiday food ever" – kid's got low standards, bless him. Outside, the sun dipped behind the Berwyn hills, painting everything golden, and we spotted a cheeky robin hopping about the garden fence. No itinerary, no rush – just us, settling into lodge life.

Wandering out for a mooch that evening, Llangollen hit us like a warm breeze. Five minutes' stroll and we're on the bridge over the Dee, steam train chuffing past from the Llangollen Railway, horses clopping by on the towpath. Picked up milk and Welsh cakes from the corner shop – proper flapjacks, sticky and moreish – and nipped into a pub for a pint of local Brunning and Price ale. The barman reckoned the town's canal festival was on soon; we filed that away for tomorrow. Back at the lodge, chaos reigned as we wrestled with the hot tub controls (why do they all have 17 buttons?), ending in giggles and soggy towels strewn everywhere.

Reflecting on it now, as the stove crackled and the lads conked out on the sofas, I realised this is what holidays are for – ditching the grind for these tiny, messy joys. No filters, no fuss, just Birches Lodge wrapping us in its no-nonsense charm. First night in, and we were already hooked on North Wales' gentle magic. Can't wait for day two.
