About North Wales
I finally made it to that 5 Bed Lodge in Berriew after a bit of a faff on the A roads from Shrewsbury. Picture this: me, singing along to some old Oasis tracks, when – splash! – I drive straight through a massive puddle left by last night's rain. My windscreen wipers went into overdrive, and I ended up looking like I'd been caught in a car wash from hell. Laughed it off, though; nothing says "holiday" like arriving a tad damp and dishevelled.

Pulling up to the lodge just outside Berriew, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a quiet spot with the River Rhiw sloping gently nearby, it felt like the perfect hideaway in the heart of Powys. The place is proper cosy – a big wooden lodge with those big windows letting in all the Welsh light, surrounded by a lush garden that's basically begging you to flop down with a book. I parked up, grabbed my weekend bag (packed lighter than usual, for once), and let myself in with the key code. First impressions? Bliss. No traffic hum, no emails pinging – just birdsong and the faint rustle of leaves.

Stepping inside, the living room hit me like a warm hug. Massive squishy sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove (unlit, but promising evenings ahead), and a telly that I knew I'd barely glance at. The kitchen was a dream for lazy cooks like me – all gleaming worktops, a huge fridge for stocking up on local cheeses and cider, and even a coffee machine that whispered "lie-ins" from the off. Upstairs, the bedrooms were spot on: ours had a super-king bed that swallowed me whole when I tested it out, with views over the garden. Five beds in total, mind – plenty of room if mates had joined, but I was solo this trip, relishing the space.

That first afternoon, I did precisely nowt, and it was glorious. Unpacked minimally, brewed a cuppa, and wandered out to the garden. It's a proper suntrap, with a patio table, loungers, and wildflowers nodding in the breeze. I cracked open my battered copy of a Bill Bryson paperback – something light and daft – and stretched out, watching clouds drift over the hills. Berriew village is only a short stroll away, so I ambled down later for a mooch. The canal basin there is dead peaceful, with narrowboats bobbing and a little shop flogging pasties and papers. Grabbed a flapjack, chatted with the postman about the weather (classic British icebreaker), and headed back without a care.

Evening rolled in slow and easy. Fired up the BBQ in the garden – nothing fancy, just sausages from the local butchers and a bottle of Brains SA. Sat there as the sun dipped, feeling that rare proper unwind. No plans, no rush. Just the lodge's quiet magic doing its thing. Later, curled up by the stove with a blanket and Netflix on low volume, I had one of those gentle moments: life's mad rush back home? Bollocks to it. This is what recharging looks like – doing bugger all in the best possible way.

By bedtime, I was already plotting the next two days of similar sloth: more reading, maybe a lazy loop around the village paths, or just garden dozing if the sun played ball. First impressions sealed it – this Berriew lodge is my new go-to for switching off. If you're after North Wales without the hike-and-bike hassle, get yourself here. Pure joy in the art of sweet FA.
