About North Wales
I finally made it to the 2 Bed Lodge in Upper Battlefield after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Shropshire. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A5, windows down, singing along to some cracking indie tunes on the radio, when – splat – a rogue pigeon decides my windscreen needs a fresh coat of... well, you know. Laughable really, but it turned into a comedy of errors at the nearest services, faffing about with windscreen wiper fluid and paper towels while lorries thundered past. By the time I'd scraped it clean, I was proper knackered, but that little mishap just made the arrival feel even sweeter.

Pulling up to the lodge around teatime on that first Friday, I was hit with this instant wave of "ahh, this is it." Tucked away in a peaceful spot just off the beaten track in North Wales, the place is pure cosy perfection – a proper little timber lodge with that welcoming wooden vibe, surrounded by a lush garden that screams "put your feet up and forget the world." I parked up, grabbed my weekend bag (light packing, folks – just books, snacks, and a bottle of decent red), and stepped inside. The door creaked open to reveal a snug living area with a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, squashy sofas piled with cushions, and a kitchenette that had everything you'd need without any faff. Two bedrooms off to the side, crisp white duvets and views peeking out to the greenery – it was like the universe had whispered, "Slow down, mate."

First impressions? Blissfully unhurried. I dumped my stuff, cracked open a cold one from the fridge (they'd stocked the basics, bless 'em), and flopped straight into the garden. It's a proper suntrap, that garden – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a couple of bird feeders twitching with feisty robins, and those sturdy wooden benches just made for lounging. I spent the first hour there doing sweet nothing: feet up on a stool, nose in a battered copy of Bill Bryson I'd been meaning to read for ages. The sun dipped low, painting everything golden, and I couldn't stop grinning at how daft it was – me, a city lad usually rushing about, now riveted by descriptions of American quirks while a squirrel eyed me suspiciously from the fence.

Saturday morning kicked off lazy as you like. No alarm, just birdsong filtering through the open window. I pottered about in joggers and slippers, brewing a massive pot of tea and frying up eggs on the hob. Breakfast in the garden again, watching mist lift off the nearby fields – Upper Battlefield's got that gentle Welsh countryside charm, all rolling green and not a hint of hustle. Ventured out for a gentle amble, no more than a mile or so down the lane to a little local farm shop. Nabbed some fresh scones, clotted cream, and strawberry jam – proper treat. Back at the lodge, it was straight into "do nothing" mode: stretched out on the sofa with the stove crackling (I'd got it going with logs from the porch stack), devouring those scones and flipping pages. The joy of it! No itinerary, no screens pinging, just the tick of a clock and the odd sheep baaing in the distance.

By evening, as I sipped that red wine on the patio, watching bats flit about, I had one of those quiet moments of self-reflection. Life back home's all deadlines and dash – emails at dawn, meetings that drag – but here, in this unassuming lodge, I realised how much I'd been missing the simple art of bugger all. It's not about grand adventures; it's the luxury of time stretching out, letting your mind wander like the clouds overhead. Sunday dawned much the same – more reading in the garden, a slow wander to spot wild garlic in the hedgerows nearby, then packing with genuine reluctance. Driving off, windscreen mercifully pigeon-free, I felt recharged, lighter. If you're after a spot to properly unwind in North Wales, this 2 Bed Lodge is your ticket to joyful idleness. Can't recommend it enough.
