About North Wales
I finally made it to Cyffylliog after a bit of a faff on the A525 from Ruthin. Picture this: me, sat-nav in hand, trundling along those twisty North Wales lanes with the windows down, breathing in that crisp, peaty air that screams "proper countryside". I'd packed light – just a rucksack, a couple of books, and enough tea bags to last a siege – because this three-day jaunt was all about switching off. But typical me, I managed to spill half my flask of builder's tea right across the passenger seat about five miles out. Soggy jeans and a mild panic later, I spotted the sign for the 1 Bed Lodge In Cyffylliog, tucked away down a quiet track. What a sight for sore eyes.

Pulling up, I was gobsmacked by how perfectly it nestled into the landscape. This wee lodge, all timber and charm, sat in its own private garden like it had sprouted there naturally. No sprawling estate, just a cosy nook with rolling fields stretching out, dotted with sheep that eyed me suspiciously as if I'd gatecrashed their nap. The sun was dipping low, painting everything golden, and I thought, "Right, this is it – three days of bugger all, and I'm here for it." Keys in hand from the discreet key safe, I stepped inside, and blimey, it was like the place had been waiting just for me.

First impressions? Pure hygge, Welsh style. The open-plan living space was compact but cracking – a squishy sofa piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening fire (though it was mild enough to skip it), and a kitchenette kitted out with everything you'd need for scoffing toast and brewing pots of PG Tips. That one bedroom? A proper haven: double bed with fluffy bedding, views straight out to the garden, and a en-suite that was spotless, no faffing about. I dumped my bag, cracked open a window, and flopped onto the sofa with a sigh of relief. The joy of doing sod all hit me like a warm wave. No itinerary, no alarms – just the tick of a clock and birdsong filtering in.

Stepping out into the garden was the clincher. Enclosed and private, with a patio table, chairs, and grass that practically invited you to sprawl out with a book. I grabbed my battered copy of a P.G. Wodehouse novel – Jeeves always good for a chuckle – and parked myself there as the evening light faded. A cheeky robin hopped over, probably eyeing my biscuit crumbs, and I laughed out loud at how daft it felt to be this content with zero plans. No hiking marathons or tourist traps; just me, a flask (carefully balanced this time), and the slow rhythm of the countryside. Cyffylliog itself is a blink-and-you-miss-it village, just a gentle wander away – a quick potter past the local church and a few stone cottages, popping into the post office for milk and a natter with the chap behind the counter about the weather. "Proper grand up here, innit?" he said, and I couldn't agree more.

That first evening, as I lounged with my feet up, watching the stars pop out one by one, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home's a non-stop whirl – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here, in this unassuming lodge, I realised how knackered I'd been without clocking it. Slowing down isn't lazy; it's bloody essential. No grand adventures needed; the real magic was in the quiet – the rustle of leaves, the distant bleat of lambs, the simple pleasure of a cuppa as the world unwinds. By bedtime, snuggled under the duvet with the window cracked, I was already plotting how to stretch this vibe out forever. North Wales, you've got me hooked on doing precisely nowt, and loving every idle minute.
