About Newport
First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The place is proper cosy – a modern wooden lodge with that fresh piney smell as you step inside, all shiny laminate floors and plush sofas begging for a family pile-in. We dumped the bags in the open-plan living area, which has this massive telly (perfect for the boys' FIFA marathons later) and a kitchen that's kitted out better than ours at home. I clocked the Nespresso machine straight away – result! – and the American-style fridge-freezer groaning under the weight of space for all our snacks. The decking out back was the real star though: a sunny wooden platform with chairs and a table, overlooking a quiet green sward where kids were already kicking a ball about. Newport's got that chilled rural edge here, close enough to nip into town but far enough to feel like your own woodland hideaway. The bedrooms sealed the deal. Three of them, all ensuite, with kingsize beds that could swallow you whole. Ours had this huge window framing the trees – woke up to birdsong the next morning, feeling like we'd decamped to a posh caravan park (in the best way). The lads claimed the twin room with its cheeky bunk bed setup; I could hear them plotting midnight raids on the biscuit tin before we'd even unpacked. Light streams in everywhere, and those crisp white duvets screamed "relax, you've earned this." The bathrooms are spotless too – power showers that could blast away a week's worth of city grime, fluffy towels, the lot. We didn't waste time gawping; it was straight into lodge life chaos. Unloading the car turned into a comedy of errors – dog scarpering with a sock, one bag splitting open and spewing crisps across the deck. The boys dashed out to explore the park's play area, just a stone's throw away, while I fired up the BBQ (gas one, thank God – no faffing with charcoal). Newport's got these brilliant local spots within walking distance: we wandered down to the nearby shops for essentials, grabbing pasties from a chippy that tasted like heaven after our road mishap. Sat on the deck that first evening, munching and watching the sun dip behind the trees, with the faint hum of families nearby – it was pure simple pleasure. No grand plans, just us lot soaking it in. That first night, as I nursed a cold beer and watched the kids chase fireflies (or were they just glow bugs? Who knows), I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's been a whirlwind lately – work deadlines, school runs, the usual treadmill. Here, in this unassuming lodge, everything slowed right down. It's the little things, innit? A wrong turn leading to the right place, a deck for storytelling, a family knackered from fresh air. Newport's no flashy destination, but this spot nailed the relaxed break vibe. Can't wait to see what the next couple of days bring, but blimey, what a cracking start. |
