I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Newport after a bit of a faff on the journey down. I'd driven from the mainland, crossing over on the ferry to the Isle of Wight, but wouldn't you know it, I managed to spill my entire thermos of tea all over the passenger seat about halfway there. Sod's law, innit? Mopped it up with some old rags from the boot, but by the time I pulled up to the lodge, I was knackered and smelling faintly of Earl Grey. Still, as I unlocked the door and stepped inside, all that melted away – this was the start of my three-day mission to do bugger all, and it felt bloody perfect.

The lodge itself is a right little gem, tucked away in a quiet spot just on the edge of Newport, with that proper Welsh cottage vibe – wait, no, hang on, Isle of Wight charm, all stone walls and a pitched roof that screams "cosy hideaway". It's only a one-bed setup, ideal for a solo wanderer like me, with a snug double bed piled high with quilts that practically begged me to flop straight in. First impressions? Heaven. The open-plan living area has this fab wood-burning stove (though I didn't light it – too lazy even for that), a squishy sofa facing a telly I never switched on, and a kitchenette stocked with all the basics: kettle, toaster, and enough tea bags to sink a ship. I dumped my bag, kicked off my shoes, and just stood there breathing it in – that faint scent of fresh linen and polished wood, no rush, no noise, just me and the promise of sweet nothing.

Stepping out into the garden was the real kicker. It's a proper sun trap, enclosed with high hedges for ultimate privacy, a couple of weathered benches, and pots overflowing with herbs and wildflowers. I plonked myself down with a cuppa (freshly brewed this time) and watched the world go by – or rather, not go by. Birds chirping, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves, and in the distance, the faint hum of Newport life without any of the hassle. No grand plans; I wasn't trekking to distant beaches or queuing for tourist traps. This was about savouring the slow lane, right here within a stone's throw of the high street if I fancied a wander later.

That first afternoon, I cracked open a dog-eared paperback I'd brought – some light crime thriller – and lost hours to it, only breaking to make a lazy ham sarnie from the fridge provisions. The sun dipped low, casting golden light over the garden, and I swear, I felt my shoulders unclench for the first time in months. Dinner was even dafter: I ambled down to a nearby Newport spot for fish and chips (proper greasy, wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench back at the lodge), then back to the sofa for more reading by the soft glow of a table lamp. No social media scrolls, no emails pinging – just the joy of switching off.

Reflecting on it now, as I lounged there that first evening with my feet up, I realised how rare it is to let yourself properly unwind. Work's been manic, life's a whirlwind of to-dos, and here I was, guilty only of overdoing the biscuits from the corner shop. It's daft how doing very little recharges you more than any gym session or adventure. The lodge wrapped me in its quiet magic, from the creaky floorboards underfoot to the way the windows framed lazy views of the garden. Newport's right there if you want it – a gentle stroll to the market for local bread or a pub pint – but honestly, who needs more when you've got this? My first impressions sealed it: this is the holiday I didn't know I needed, all about sinking into the sofa, pottering in the garden, and letting time stretch out like a cat in the sun.
