I finally made it to The Rowan Pod after a bit of a faff on the winding roads of Mid Wales, my little hatchback groaning up the hills like it was auditioning for a hill-climbing rally. We'd set off from Cowbridge that morning for this three-day family getaway, me, the wife, and our two lads aged eight and ten, all buzzing about escaping the daily grind for some pod life in the Welsh countryside. No grand mansion, just a pint-sized retreat with a veranda that screamed "put your feet up." We parked on the gravel patch – no more spills, thank goodness – and tumbled out, bags in tow, the boys already racing to poke at the undergrowth.

Stepping inside was like shrinking into a fairy tale. The space is compact but clever: double bed up a couple of steps (perfect for us grown-ups), bunk beds for the lads tucked in like a ship's cabin, and a kitchenette gleaming with all the basics – kettle on, tea bags at the ready. First job: brews all round. I flicked on the hob for a cuppa while Sarah unpacked the (slightly sticky) picnic bits. The lads claimed their bunks with whoops, bouncing to test the springs, and within minutes, the pod filled with that holiday hum – laughter, the clink of mugs, the faint bleat of lambs outside. We cracked open a window, and there it was: fresh country air laced with grass and earth, a world away from traffic fumes.

That first afternoon set the tone for our relaxed family break. We lounged on the veranda with sarnies, watching clouds scud over the hills. The boys discovered a patch of buttercups nearby and fashioned wonky crowns, dubbing themselves "Pod Kings." I joined in, feeling a proper daft dad, but it was brilliant – no screens, just us and the simple joy of messing about. Later, we wandered a short loop around the paddock, spotting buzzards wheeling overhead and a cheeky robin hopping close, probably eyeing our crumbs. Back at the pod, chaos reigned again as we tried cooking pasta on the tiny stove; sauce bubbled over, filling the air with tomatoey steam, and Finn ended up with more on his face than his plate. As evening drew in, we lit the pod's little heater – it was one of those crisp Mid Wales dusks – and snuggled under blankets with hot chocolate.
