I’ll never forget the drive to Oak in Cowbridge, Mid Wales – a proper comedy of errors that had me questioning my sat-nav skills before I’d even unpacked. It was a drizzly Friday afternoon in late spring, the kind where the Welsh hills look like they’ve been gift-wrapped in mist, and I was buzzing for my three-day escape to this cosy little cottage I’d booked on a whim. Fresh out of Cardiff after a hectic week, I figured the A48 would be a doddle – about 20 miles door-to-door. But no, my ancient TomTom decided to throw a wobbly just past Bridgend, directing me down a narrow lane that turned into a muddy farm track. “Recalculating,” it chirped cheerfully as I reversed into a hedge, splattering my windscreen with cow muck. Brilliant. There I was, swearing like a trooper, fishing soggy tissues from the glovebox to wipe it off, while a sheep eyed me suspiciously from the verge. Pulling up outside Oak, though, all that chaos melted away like chocolate on a hot Aga. But it’s the front garden that hits you first – a riot of cottage flowers, lavender buzzing with bees, and a weathered bench perfect for a cuppa. I fumbled the key from under the flowerpot (old-school Wales at its best) and pushed open the bright red door, half-expecting a sitcom family to tumble out.

Inside, blimey, it was love at first sight. The living room’s got this massive inglenook fireplace, all blackened stone and ready for a log burner crackle – though I didn’t light it that first evening, too knackered from my driving debacle. Plump sofas in muted greens and blues faced a telly that looked like it got BBC Wales crystal clear, and there were fresh eggs on the kitchen counter from some local farm, with a cheeky note saying “Help yourself, bach.” The kitchen itself? Compact but kitted out like a telly chef’s dream – Belfast sink, rayburn humming away, and herbs growing on the windowsill overlooking a private patio. I cracked open a beer from the fridge (stocked with local Brecon beers, naturally) and just stood there, grinning like an idiot. The bedrooms upstairs were snug as a bug: my double had a view straight over rooftops to the distant hills, with crisp cotton sheets and a hot water bottle waiting like a fluffy hug.

Wandering out for first impressions proper, Cowbridge didn’t disappoint. Five minutes’ stroll and I was in the heart of it – the High Street’s a gem, lined with independent shops like the bookshop crammed with Welsh myths and a deli piled high with Bara Brith and cheeses that could make you weep. I grabbed a pasty from the bakery, still warm, and sat on a bench by the market cross, watching locals natter in that lilting Valleys accent. No tourist traps here; it’s real life, with a butcher hollering specials and kids kicking a ball in the square. The Vale of Glamorgan countryside peeps in everywhere – gentle hills rolling off towards Llanblethian, just a hop away, where the old church ruin glows golden in the evening sun.

That first hour at Oak, post-mishap, forced a bit of a think. There I was, city-stressed me, arriving in a flap, yet this place wrapped me up in calm like a favourite jumper. It’s funny how a daft drive can sharpen your senses – made me notice the way sunlight slants through the cottage beams, or the quiet joy of no emails pinging.
