About Mid Wales
I finally made it to Cabanau Bach after a bit of a faff on the winding roads of Mid Wales. It was one of those classic British drives – you know the sort, where the sat-nav cheerfully insists you're almost there, but then you end up behind a tractor doing 15mph for what feels like an eternity. Mine was a minor mishap: I missed the turn for the narrow lane leading to the cottage and had to execute a three-point turn on a verge that was basically one big puddle. Sodden trainers aside, I arrived just as the late afternoon sun was dipping behind the hills, turning the whole scene into a proper postcard.

Pulling up to Cabanau Bach, I was smitten straight away. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Caerphilly – close enough for a wander but far enough to feel like your own little world – this cosy lodge looked like it had been plucked from a fairy tale. Stone-built with a thatched roof (or at least it gave that vibe), it sat amid a lush garden that's more wildflower meadow than manicured lawn. I parked on the gravel drive, grabbed my weekend bag, and stepped inside, the door creaking open to reveal a space that screamed 'kick off your shoes and stay a while'.

First impressions? Pure bliss. The living room was all exposed beams, a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy fire (though I didn't light it on day one – too summery), and squishy sofas piled with cushions. I dumped my stuff and made straight for the kettle – proper tea, none of that teabag-in-mug nonsense; there was a tin of loose Earl Grey waiting. Mug in hand, I flopped onto the sofa with a book I'd been meaning to crack open for months. The joy of doing bugger all hit me like a warm hug. No emails pinging, no deadlines, just the tick of a clock and birdsong filtering through the open window.

That first evening, I pottered about the garden, which wraps around the lodge like a secret hideaway. It's got a patio with a table and chairs, perfect for al fresco lounging, and borders bursting with foxgloves and lavender. I spotted a hammock strung between two trees – genius. Swinging gently with my book (some daft crime novel that had me chuckling at the plot holes), I watched the light fade over the rolling fields. Mid Wales does that slowing-down magic so well; it's like the hills themselves whisper, 'Chill out, mate.' No grand plans, just me, a crisp packet for dinner (cheeky first-night treat), and the satisfaction of achieving precisely nowt.

Day two dawned misty, the sort of soft Welsh morning that makes you burrow back under the duvet. Cabanau Bach's bedroom is a dream – low-beamed ceiling, a king-sized bed with the fluffiest pillows, and views straight out to the garden. I lingered there far longer than necessary, savouring the luxury of zero alarm clock. Breakfast was toast and marmalade on the kitchen table, sunlight streaming in, before another session of doing sweet FA. A gentle stroll down the lane took me to a nearby footpath – nothing strenuous, just enough to stretch the legs and breathe in that fresh country air laced with sheep wool.

By afternoon, I was back in the garden, feet up on a lounger, lost in my book again. There's something hilariously profound about these moments; I caught myself reflecting on how I've spent years rushing about, chasing 'productivity', only to realise the best recharge is this – unhurried, uncomplicated nothing. A cuppa, a page-turn, the odd doze. Later, I ambled to a local farm shop less than a mile away for cheese and fresh bread – proper Welsh cheddar, crumbly and sharp. Picnic in the garden, watching butterflies flit about. No itinerary, no Instagram poses, just pure, unadulterated loafing.

That first full day blurred into evening with the same easy rhythm. As the sun set, painting the sky in pinks and golds, I lit a candle (the lodge had a stash) and cracked open a bottle of wine. Sitting there, cosy as you like, I felt utterly content. Cabanau Bach isn't about big adventures; it's a love letter to slowing right down, and boy, did those first impressions deliver. If you're after a spot to switch off in Mid Wales, this is it – mishaps and all.
