About Llandudno
I finally made it to Ash Cottages in Llandudno after a drive that was equal parts scenic and sodding infuriating. We'd set off from home early, the kids buzzing in the back with their iPads, me and Sarah plotting a proper family unwind in this Welsh gem. But no, halfway through the A55, I managed to spill an entire thermos of tea across the dashboard – classic me, turning a simple Thermos lid twist into a mini flood. Cue soggy maps, frantic paper towel swipes, and the kids chanting "Dad's a klutz!" all the way to the Conwy turn-off. Laughable now, but at the time, I was cursing my own clumsiness while Sarah stifled giggles behind her shades.

Pulling up to Ash Cottages just before teatime felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in that lush bit near Llanrwst – proper North Wales countryside vibes, all rolling hills and sheep-dotted fields within spitting distance of Llandudno's buzz – these aren't your bog-standard holiday lets. Elzono, our pick of the bunch, is this cosy two-bed stone cottage that screams "kick back and forget the world." We parked on the gravel drive, crunching under the tyres, and there it was: low-beamed ceilings, a cheeky wood-burner begging for logs, and French doors spilling out to a private patio that backs right onto woodland. First impressions? Blissful lodge life, with just enough rustic charm to make you feel like you're roughing it posh-style.

Stepping inside was pure magic after that car calamity. The open-plan living space hit us with warmth – flagstone floors, squashy sofas in muted greens, and a kitchen kitted out with all the bits you forget you need: cafetière, toaster that actually toasts, even a proper herb chopper for Sarah's culinary experiments. The kids bolted straight for their room upstairs, shrieking over the bunk beds and that skylight framing the evening sky. "It's like a treehouse, Mum!" Little chaos merchants, unpacking sweets before socks. I wandered the ground-floor master, loving the en-suite with its rainfall shower – heaven for washing off the road dust – and those views through the window of the garden humming with birdsong.

We cracked open the welcome pack (fresh milk, local biscuits, the works) and fired up the kettle while the sun dipped low over the hills. First evening sorted: cheese on toast on the patio, watching the light fade as a cheeky robin eyed our crumbs. Llandudno's promenade is only a short hop away – ten minutes tops – so we could've nipped down for chips and the pier's arcade lights twinkling like Christmas, but nah. This was about that lodge life lull, the simple joy of nowhere to be. The kids chased each other round the garden, inventing games with sticks, while Sarah and I cracked a bottle of plonk, toasting the nothing-much magic of it all.

That first night, tucked under the duck-down duvet with rain pattering the skylight, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind – deadlines, school runs, the endless scroll. Here, spilling tea seemed like the highlight of drama, and honestly? It was brilliant. Ash Cottages nailed that relaxed family break vibe straight off: unpretentious, comfy, with just enough wild-edge chaos from the woodland whispers and kiddo antics to keep it real. No grand adventures needed yet; arriving felt like the holiday proper had begun. Can't wait to wake up to breakfast smells and see what tomorrow's simple pleasures bring.
