About Llandudno
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Llannefydd after a right faff of a drive from Llandudno town centre. I'd planned a cheeky three-day getaway to unwind in north Wales, but wouldn't you know it, about five miles out, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had me convinced my little hatchback was auditioning for a monster truck rally. Bumping over potholes the size of dinner plates, I laughed at myself – typical me, can't even follow the sat-nav without turning it into an off-road adventure. Eventually, I doubled back, heart still thumping, and pulled up to the lodge just as the sun dipped low over the Conwy countryside.

First impressions? Blimey, what a hidden gem this place is. Tucked away in Llannefydd, it's proper off-the-beaten-track – no tourist coaches honking here, just the quiet hum of rural Wales. The lodge itself is a snug wooden haven, all warm wood cladding and a veranda that begs for a cuppa at dawn. I stepped inside, dropped my bags, and immediately felt that "ahh" moment – compact but perfect for one, with a squishy double bed piled high with quilts, a kitchenette stocked for lazy brekkies, and French doors opening straight onto rolling fields. No posh spa or infinity pool, mind, but who needs that when you've got this peaceful nook? I cracked open a tin of Welsh cakes I'd nabbed from Llandudno market earlier and surveyed my kingdom.

Keen to explore before dark, I hopped in the car for a gentle wander, letting whimsy guide me rather than any map. That's when the real magic kicked in – stumbling on Llannefydd's hidden gems by pure accident. First off, I veered down a unmarked track and found myself at a tiny farm shop I'd never heard of, run by a cheery couple flogging homemade bara brith and jars of local honey. Proper fresh, it was – none of your supermarket rubbish. Chatting to them over a brew, they tipped me off about a secret spot just a mile away: an old stone bridge over a babbling brook, overgrown with ferns and wild garlic. I parked up and scrambled down – no barriers, no crowds, just me, the rushing water, and a kingfisher darting about like it owned the place. Sat there on a mossy rock, feet dangling, I had one of those gentle self-reflective moments. Life back home's all rush and noise; out here, getting lost feels like the best plan ever. Why do we fight it so hard?

Emboldened, I pushed on, taking another "shortcut" that led to a forgotten corner of Llannefydd's back lanes. Ended up at a weathered chapel half-hidden by hawthorn hedges, its lychgate creaking in the breeze. Peeking inside, it was empty save for dusty pews and sunlight slanting through stained glass – a proper time capsule. I picnicked there with cheese on oatcakes, chuckling at how I'd accidentally dodged the usual Llandudno promenades for this serene bolthole. No pier chips or donkey rides for me; instead, the simple joy of sheep-nattered fields and unexpected wildflower meadows popping up round every bend.

As dusk fell, I meandered back to the lodge, spotting one last accidental treasure: a cluster of beehives by a hedgerow, buzzing softly, with the farmer waving hello from afar. Back inside, I lit the wood burner (plenty of logs provided, hurrah), poured a glass of Brânston pickle-enhanced ploughman's from the fridge, and sprawled on the sofa. First day in, and already hooked on the pleasures of getting lost – no itinerary, just serendipity. Llannefydd's quiet lanes and the lodge's intimate charm have me pondering a return. Who knew five miles from Llandudno's bustle lay such unspoiled bliss?
