About Llandudno
I finally made it to Llandudno after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from the motorway, my little hatchback groaning under the weight of a boot stuffed with enough wellies and waterproofs to kit out the Welsh rugby team. It was one of those classic British holidays starts – grey skies threatening rain, and me cursing the sat-nav for leading me on a merry dance through narrow lanes that narrowed even further into what I swear was a goat track. The mishap? About five minutes from the lodge, I managed to splatter a full cuppa all over the passenger seat while trying to negotiate a particularly enthusiastic pothole. "Brilliant," I muttered, mopping up with a service station napkin, now smelling like a mobile PG Tips factory. But hey, that's me – turning a simple 90-minute journey into a comedy of errors.

Pulling up to the 1 Bed Lodge in Llandudno, though, all that chaos melted away like ice cream on the pier in July. Tucked just on the edge of town, it's one of those cosy little spots that screams "get away from it all" without actually being miles from the action. The lodge itself is a proper gem – wooden cladding giving it that alpine vibe, but with a proper Welsh welcome mat at the door. I fumbled the key code (post-spillage hands still sticky), but once inside, blimey, it was like stepping into a hug. Compact but spot-on for one: a snug double bed piled high with fluffy pillows, a kitchenette that had everything from a Nespresso pod machine to a toaster begging for crumpets, and a bathroom so clean you could eat your tea off the floor. Large windows framed the rolling hills behind, with glimpses of the sea twinkling in the distance – proper North Wales magic.

First impressions? Instant love. I dumped my bags and cracked open the complimentary bottle of local cider they'd left chilling – cheeky touch, that. Sat on the surprisingly comfy sofa, feet up, I could hear the faint crash of waves from the bay, even though it's just a short stroll away. No traffic hum, no shouting kids (yet), just birdsong and the odd sheep bleating in the field next door. It's the sort of place that makes you breathe deeper, you know? After my arrival kerfuffle, it felt like the lodge was saying, "Don't worry, mate, we've got you."

Wandering out for a nose around, I ambled down to the nearby beach – Llandudno's West Shore, all vast sands and gentle waves perfect for a post-drive paddle. The Victorian pier was calling from across the bay, but I saved that for later; first, I needed to soak in the lodge's vibe. Back inside, I fired up the telly for a bit of Loose Women catch-up, then rustled up beans on toast in the kitchen – nothing fancy, but it tasted like heaven with that sea air wafting in. The decking area out back? Pure bliss. A couple of chairs, a bit of shelter, and views over the Conwy countryside that had me grinning like an idiot. I even spotted a rabbit hopping about, which felt like a proper countryside bonus.

That first afternoon, as the sun peeked through (miracles do happen), I plonked myself there with a brew, reflecting on how daft it is that we city folk wait till half-term to remember what fresh air smells like. Me, with my spill-stained trousers and zero itinerary – what a numpty. But this lodge? It's the perfect reset button. Cosy, quiet, and close enough to pop into town for fish and chips at the Great Orme end or a pint at a pub on Mostyn Street without the hassle. Three days here, and I'm already plotting a return. If arrival chaos is the price for first impressions this good, I'll take a pothole-spilled tea any day.
