About Gower Peninsula
I finally made it to Glamping Pod 5 on the Gower Peninsula after a bit of a faff on the road from Swansea. Picture this: I'm trundling along the twisty A4118, windows down, humming along to some Proper 80s on the radio, when – splat! – a rogue seagull decides my windscreen needs a fresh coat of paint. Not just any splat, mind; this was Jackson Pollock-level abstract art, right in my line of sight. I pulled over at the next layby, cursing under my breath while fumbling for wet wipes in the glovebox. Ten minutes and a sleeve of baby wipes later, I was back on track, laughing at myself for packing posh eco-friendly ones that turned to mush on contact. Typical me, overprepared for everything except nature's drive-by artists.

Rolling up to the pod around teatime, I was gobsmacked by the spot. Tucked into a lush garden just off the lane near Castle, it's proper glamping – cosy wooden pod with a veranda overlooking sheep-dotted fields rolling down to the sea. The air smelled of salt and wildflowers, and the sun was dipping low over Rhossili Bay in the distance. But honestly, it was the locals who turned my first impressions into pure gold. No sooner had I lugging my bag out than Dai the farmer ambled over from the neighbouring field, his wellies caked in mud and a flat cap perched at a jaunty angle.

"Alright there, bach? You the pod lot?" he grinned, eyeing my city trainers like they'd personally offended him. Dai's the sort who looks like he's stepped out of a postcard – ruddy cheeks, twinkling eyes, and a voice like gravel wrapped in honey. Turned out he's the landowner, tending the sheep that basically co-own the place. We got chatting over a cuppa he rustled up from his thermos (proper builder's tea, none of your herbal nonsense). "Seen 'em all come through here," he chuckled, nodding at the pod. "City folk thinking they're Bear Grylls after one night. You brought your wellies?" I confessed I hadn't, and he roared with laughter. "Right, borrow mine tomorrow – size 10, mind, they'll swallow ya whole!" His tales of escaped sheep photobombing weddings at nearby Three Cliffs Bay had me in stitches. "One time, that bugger Trevor the ram gatecrashed a proposal. Bloke on one knee, ring out, and bam – horns in the selfie!"

As the sun set, I settled on the veranda with a Gower Gold ale from the local shop, when in wandered Mags, the no-nonsense landlady from the farm cottage up the track. She's a force of nature, all wiry energy and peroxide curls, with a laugh that echoes like a foghorn. "Newbie, eh? Don't let Dai fill your head with sheep yarns – half's made up!" she teased, plonking down a plate of fresh scones still warm from her Aga. Mags runs the honesty box for eggs and veg at the gate; her stories were pure Gower folklore. She regaled me with the time a coachload of tourists mistook her chickens for wild beasts and legged it screaming down to Oxwich Bay. "I says to 'em, 'Love, these birds wouldn't hurt a fly – unlike my tabby!' " We nattered about everything from the best pasty spot in Reynoldston (Merv's, hands down) to her battle with the badgers raiding her bins. "Cheeky sods, bolder than the holidaymakers!"

Then there was young Tom, the surfing lad from the village, who popped by on his bike to check the pod's hot tub was bubbling away. Barely out of school, with sun-bleached hair and a wetsuit tan, he's the epitome of Gower cool. "Waves were mental at Llangennith today," he said, fiddling with the jets. "Fancy a go tomorrow?" His deadpan humour cracked me up when he confessed to once paddling out with a pod of dolphins. "Thought they were mermaids at first – told me mam, and she says, 'Tom, you've been at the cider!' " We swapped yarns about city life versus peninsula pace, him ribbing me for my "fancy" pod booking when his van's parked beachside.

Lying in the pod that first night, fairy lights twinkling outside, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid the laughter and characters, I realised how rare it is to stumble into such unfiltered warmth. No pretence, just proper folk sharing their patch of paradise. In a world of screens and small talk, Dai, Mags, and Tom's easy banter felt like a tonic. Gower's magic isn't just the pods or bays – it's them, the quirky souls who make you feel like you've been mates forever. Can't wait for day two.
