About Gower Peninsula
Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling into a postcard. It's one of those posh static caravans – all mod cons with a massive deck jutting out like a ship's prow, staring straight at the sea. The Gower's coastline doesn't mess about; from that deck, you've got waves crashing on the rocks below, Three Cliffs Bay shimmering in the distance, and not a soul in sight except for the odd sheep bleating on the hillside. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of Brains, and just breathed it in. First impressions? Pure magic. Ensuite bathroom bigger than my flat's kitchen back home, deck chairs begging for a sit-down, and that sea view hitting you like a tonic. But honestly, what made the whole arrival sing weren't the views – stunning as they were – it was the characters I bumped into right off the bat. First up was Dai, the park's handyman, who was tinkering with a wonky gate near reception. He's this wiry bloke in his seventies, flat cap perched at a jaunty angle, with a beard that could hide a pasty. "New 'ere, are ya?" he grinned, eyeing my gull-smeared reg plate. I nodded, and before I knew it, he was regaling me with tales of the '78 blizzard that buried the park up to the chimneys. "Sheep were ski-jumpin' off the dunes!" he cackled, handing me a spare key like we were old mates. Dai's the sort who knows every inch of Gower – pointed out the best spot for cockling down at Burry Inlet, just a mile away, and warned me off the jellyfish at low tide. "They sting worse than me ex-wife," he winked. Proper legend. Then there was Mrs. Evans from the adjacent lodge, a pensioner with a perm like a sheep's fleece and a laugh that carried over the waves. She'd clocked me faffing with my luggage and wandered over with a plate of bara brith. "Made too much, bach," she said, thrusting it at me. We ended up chatting on my deck as the sun dipped, her spilling the beans on local lore. Did you know the Gower's got more shipwrecks per mile than anywhere in Wales? She reckoned her grandad salvaged rum from one off Worms Head – "Kept the village merry for a month!" We swapped stories; I told her about my London grind, she shared how she cycles to the pub in Llangennith every Friday. "Keeps the hips loose," she chuckled, demonstrating a wobbly pedal mime that had us both in stitches. And don't get me started on young Tommo, the surfer lad manning the park's honesty shop. Barefoot, board shorts, tattoos up to his elbows – he looked like he'd washed up from Oxwich Bay himself. "Sea view treating you alright?" he asked, flogging me some local cider. Turned out he's a born-and-bred Gower boy, knows every break from Langland to Caswell. We got chatting about the seals that bob about the headlands; he swore one's called Boris after pinching fish from boats. "Spotted him this morning, bold as brass." His easy banter made the place feel like family from minute one. Sitting there that first evening, deck underfoot, Mrs. Evans' cake in hand, Dai's warnings echoing, and Tommo's cider warming me up, I had a proper moment. Back in the city, I'm always rushing, head down, missing the wood for the trees. Here, in this unassuming lodge with its killer view, these quirky locals reminded me life's about the chats, the daft stories, the human bit. Gower's got it in spades – and so did my first impressions. Can't wait for day two. |
