I finally made it to the 3 Bed Lodge in Swansea's Upper Killay after what felt like the most faffing about journey ever. Picture this: I'd driven down from Cardiff early that Friday morning, sat-nav confidently directing me through the winding lanes of the Gower Peninsula, windows down to catch that briny sea air. Gower's got that magic, doesn't it? All rugged cliffs and sandy bays just begging to be explored. But no, about five miles out, disaster struck – or at least, my particular brand of chaos did. I'd stopped at a little petrol station near Killay for a pasty and a coffee, and in my excitement, managed to lock my keys in the boot. Proper numpty moment. There I was, rummaging through my backpack like a deranged squirrel, phone in hand calling the AA while a queue of locals in 4x4s eyed me suspiciously. Half an hour later, rescue arrived, and I was back on the road, cheeks burning, vowing to never again treat my car like an oversized locker.

By the time I pulled up to the lodge around lunchtime, I was knackered but buzzing.
