About Gower Peninsula
I finally made it to the Gower Peninsula after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Swansea. I'd taken a wrong turn somewhere near Bishopston – nothing major, just me blindly following the sat-nav while munching on a Greggs pasty, only to end up on a narrow lane that dead-ended at a sheep farmer's gate. "Classic me," I chuckled to myself, reversing like a pro (well, almost) while the farmer gave me a bemused wave. Ten minutes later, I was pulling up to the 2 Bed Lodge in Upper Killay, my home for three days of proper Welsh getaway bliss.

First impressions? Blimey, what a cracking little spot. Tucked away in a quiet corner, it's the sort of place that whispers "relax" the moment you step out of the car. The lodge itself is cosy as anything – wooden beams, a cracking wood burner (though I didn't need it in this mild September weather), and a patio that looks straight out over rolling fields. No blaring traffic, just birdsong and the distant bleat of sheep. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of Brains Bitter from the fridge (cheers to self-catering perks), and thought, right, time to explore. But not the tourist traps – nah, I was after those hidden gems you only find by accident, the off-the-beaten-track joys of getting properly lost.

Day one kicked off with a wander down the lane from the lodge. No map, no plan – just trainers on and out I went. Within five minutes, I'd stumbled on a footpath snaking through brambly hedges that opened up to a wildflower meadow I'd bet most visitors never see. It was like stepping into a secret garden: butterflies flitting about, the air thick with honeysuckle, and not a soul in sight. I plonked down on a fallen log for a brew from my flask, grinning like an idiot. Who needs Rhossili's crowds when you've got this? Feeling a tad smug, I pressed on, veering left at a whim onto a muddy track that led me to a tucked-away pond. Ducks quacked lazily, and I spotted a heron eyeing me suspiciously – proper wildlife encounter, that.

By lunchtime, I'd looped back via a shaded woodland path, all mossy trees and dappled light, emerging near a cluster of old stone cottages that looked like they'd been there since the druids. One had a honesty box selling homemade jam – I snaffled a jar of blackberry for a quid, feeling like I'd won the lottery. Back at the lodge, I rustled up a sarnie on the patio, the sun warming my face, and reflected on how daft it is that we rush about life never stopping to get lost. Here I was, mid-forties and finally learning that the best bits aren't signposted.

Afternoon brought more serendipity. A cheeky detour down a "no through road" (oops) rewarded me with a viewpoint over a hidden cove – not the big beaches, but a pebbly inlet with waves lapping at jagged rocks, fringed by ferns. I scrambled down for a paddle, the water bracing enough to make me yelp like a kid. Seals? Maybe, out there in the haze. Laughter echoed off the cliffs as I chatted with a local dog-walker who'd found the spot years ago fishing. "Get lost more often, lad," he winked. Spot on.

Evening rolled in soft and golden. From the lodge's garden, I watched the sun dip behind the hills, sipping tea and pondering how these accidental finds – the meadow, the pond, that secret cove – made the place feel like my own private Gower. No Instagram hordes, just pure, unfiltered magic. Three days in, and I'd barely scratched the surface, but arriving here and letting the paths lead me? Best decision ever. Can't wait to get lost again.
