About Gower Peninsula
I finally made it to the Gower Peninsula after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Swansea. We'd packed the car to the gills with wellies, crisps, and enough board games to survive a nuclear winter, but about five miles out, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had more potholes than a council estate car park. The SatNav lost its marbles, chirping "recalculating" like a deranged budgie, and we ended up doing a three-point turn in a passing place while a sheep gave us the evil eye. Classic me – overpacking the boot but skimping on map-reading skills. Still, 20 minutes later, we trundled into Oxwich, the sea breeze already whipping through the windows, and there she was: our 2 Bed Lodge In Oxwich, nestled in the dunes like it had been waiting just for us.

Pulling up, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those proper cosy numbers – a wooden lodge with a pitched roof, flower tubs spilling over with geraniums, and a cheeky veranda begging for a GandT at sunset. Nothing flash, mind, just solid and welcoming, the sort of place that screams "relax, you've earned this". We tumbled out, kids already kicking a football about the gravel patch out front, while I wrestled the key from the lockbox. Inside, it was pure lodge life heaven: open-plan living with a wood-burning stove (we chucked some logs on straight away for that smoky scent), a squishy corner sofa piled with cushions, and a kitchenette stocked with all the basics – kettle on the boil before we'd even unpacked. The two bedrooms were snug as a bug; ours had a double bed with crisp white sheets and views straight onto the garden, while the kids claimed the twin with its bunk-bed vibe, giggling about who got the top.

First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. We cracked open the windows to let in the sound of waves crashing just down the path – Oxwich Bay's right there, golden sands stretching out like a postcard. No five-star nonsense, but that's the point of Gower, innit? It's raw and real. I nipped out for a recce while the family sorted lunch: five-minute stroll to the beach, passing buttercup meadows buzzing with bees and the odd walker with a labrador in tow. The air's so fresh it practically slaps you – briny, wildflower-sweet, miles better than the city smog. Back at the lodge, chaos ensued: the kids raided the fridge for ice lollies (thankfully there was a freezer drawer full of 'em), leaving sticky fingerprints everywhere, and I burnt the toast trying to multitask with a cuppa. "Mum's culinary masterclass," my husband quipped, salvaging it with a dollop of jam. Light-hearted lodge pandemonium – love it.

Afternoon kicked off with proper simple pleasures. We wandered down to the beach, buckets and spades in hand, building wonky sandcastles that the tide promptly demolished. The water was bracing – proper Welsh sea, chilly enough to make you yelp – but we paddled anyway, dodging jellyfish warnings from a nearby lifeguard station. Back at the lodge, we sprawled on the veranda with mugs of tea, watching rabbits hop about the garden. It's got this private feel, screened by dunes and shrubs, yet you're steps from the action. Dinner was a lazy affair: local pasties from the Oxwich Bay shop (cheesy ones for the win), eaten picnic-style on the grass as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in pinks and oranges.

Sitting there later, feet up on the wonky picnic bench, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's been a whirlwind – work emails pinging at all hours, school runs on repeat. But here, in this little lodge, with sand in my socks and laughter echoing off the wood panels, it all melted away. We're not doing grand adventures, just breathing, paddling, and faffing about. That's the magic of Gower family breaks – no agenda, just us and the sea. Can't wait to wake up to it all over again tomorrow.
