About Gower Peninsula
By the time I pulled up to the 1 Bed Lodge in Caswell Bay, the late afternoon sun was dipping towards the horizon, painting the sky in those soft pinks and oranges that make Wales feel like a proper postcard. The lodge itself is tucked right into the bay's vibe – a snug, wooden-clad gem perched on the edge of the cliffs, with killer views straight out to the shimmering Bristol Channel. I parked on the gravel patch out front, grabbed my weekend bag, and fumbled with the keybox, still chuckling about my sheep detour. The door swung open to this instant hit of homely warmth: low-beamed ceiling, a squishy sofa begging for a collapse, and a wood-burning stove that screamed "cosy nights in" even on a balmy summer evening. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first step. The open-plan living space is compact but clever – everything you need without a scrap of clutter. The kitchenette gleamed with all the kit for knocking up a fry-up or a cheeky pasta: proper hob, fridge that actually frosts, and even a wee coffee pod machine that had me sorted with an espresso before I'd unpacked. I dumped my stuff on the king-sized bed in the bedroom (fluffy duvet, check; sea views through the window, double check), and just stood there for a mo, breathing it all in. Outside, a private patio wrapped around the lodge, complete with a hot tub bubbling away invitingly and those unbeatable panoramas of Caswell Bay's sandy curve below. You could hear the waves crashing faintly, mixed with gulls crying overhead – pure Gower magic. I couldn't resist a potter down the cliff path straight away, just a five-minute scramble to the beach. Caswell Bay is an absolute stunner: golden sand, turquoise shallows perfect for a paddle, and those limestone cliffs framing it like nature's own artwork. Families were building sandcastles, a few surfers were riding the gentle rollers, and I joined a dog walker or two for a barefoot stroll along the tide line. Back at the lodge, as the sun set proper, I cracked open a cold cider from the local shop in Bishopston (stocked up on the way, naturally), fired up the BBQ on the patio, and watched the bay light up with that golden hour glow. Sizzling sausages, the hot tub steaming beside me – it was like the universe saying, "Forget the sat-nav fiasco, mate, you're sorted now." That first evening, sinking into the hot tub with the sea breeze on my face, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's been a whirl of deadlines and to-do lists, but here, in this little Gower hideaway, everything slowed right down. The mishap on arrival? Just the universe's way of making the arrival sweeter, reminding me not to take the scenic bits for granted. As the stars popped out over the bay, I thought, yeah, this three-day jaunt's off to the perfect start. Can't wait to wake up to those waves tomorrow. |
