About River View Cottage.
Llanrwst is a thriving market town in the beautiful Conwy Valley, just four miles from Betws-y-Coed, North Wales's top inland resort and gateway to Snowdonia. Surrounded by dense woodland and mountains, it's ideal for walkers and outdoor lovers. Betws-y-Coed boasts cascading waterfalls like the Swallow Falls, river pools, ancient bridges, shops, pubs, eateries, a miniature railway, riverside golf, and the Snowdonia Visitor Centre. The scenic valley leads to coastal gems Llandudno and Conwy. Nearby attractions.
About Conwy
Pulling up to the cottage that first afternoon, I was gobsmacked. Tucked right on the River Conwy, with those postcard-perfect views of the water sparkling under the Welsh sun—proper idyllic. The place is a cosy stone-built gem, all low beams and quirky nooks, screaming "get the kettle on and raid the fridge." And raid I did, after dumping my bags. I'd stopped at the local Spar in Llanrwst en route for essentials: a slab of Welsh cheddar, fresh bread, and a bottle of Brains SA to christen the stay. First impressions? This was no bland holiday let; it felt like stumbling into a mate's nan's kitchen, all welcoming and lived-in. That evening, I cracked on with my first cooking attempt—nothing fancy, mind, but I wanted to make the most of the cottage's well-kitted-out kitchen. Grabbed some lamb chops from the butchers in Conwy town (a quick five-minute drive over the bridge), seasoned them with rosemary from the herb patch outside, and pan-fried them with new potatoes and seasonal veg. The river view from the window made it feel gourmet, even if I slightly charred the edges—blame the dodgy hob ring. Paired it with a cheeky local red from the offy, and scoffed the lot while watching the sun dip behind the hills. Bloody marvellous, and miles better than a soggy takeaway. Next morning, day two kicked off with a fry-up mission. I'd eyed up the Conwy Farmers' Market on the way in—runs Saturdays, packed with stalls heaving under leeks, artisan breads, and jars of chilli jam that could wake the dead. Snagged some smoked bacon from a proper Welsh pig farmer, free-range eggs, and black pudding that was still warm from the pan. Back at the cottage, I fired up the Aga (or whatever that range cooker was), aiming for the full Welsh breakfast. Sausages sizzling, tomatoes bursting—though I overdid the mushrooms into a soggy mush. Laughed at myself over a cuppa, thinking, "Blimey, Jamie Oliver I'm not, but it's all part of the fun." Ate it on the patio, feet up, river gurgling by. Pure bliss, and zero queues like you'd get in a busy café. Lunch was a pub crawl starter—stayed local with The Groes Inn, just a stone's throw up the road in Llanrwst. Proper old-school boozer with low ceilings and a roaring fire. Went for the fish and chips: haddock in crisp batter, fat chips, mushy peas on the side. Washed down with a pint of Conwy Brewery's County Ale—hoppy, sessionable, and only £4.50. Chatted with the barman about the best spots for crab from the estuary, feeling like a local already. Back at the cottage, I fancied a go at baking—market sconces with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Dough was a sticky nightmare (too much milk, rookie error), but they turned out lumpy yet lovely, devoured with a pot of builder's tea overlooking the water. By evening, after a gentle wander to pick up fish fresh from the river—mackerel, buttery and grilled simply with lemon—I was reflecting on it all. Here I was, three meals in, surrounded by the simple joy of good grub and cracking views, far from the daily grind. That phone charger mishap? Best thing that happened; forced me to unplug properly. River View Cottage isn't just a stay—it's a three-day feast for the soul, one delicious bite at a time. Can't wait to go back. |
