About Conwy
I finally made it to Beech Cottages in Conwy after what felt like the scenic route from hell. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, chucked in my wellies and a bag of Welsh cakes for the road, and set off from Manchester early doors, buzzing about a cheeky three-day getaway in north Wales. Conwy's one of those spots that's dead easy to romanticise – medieval walls, castle looming like a giant sandcastle, and the river estuary sparkling away. But no, my sat-nav decided to play silly buggers about ten miles out, near Llanrwst. It rerouted me down a single-track lane that was basically a sheep's personal catwalk, complete with a ewe staring me down like I'd gatecrashed her spa day. I scraped the wing mirror on a rogue hedge – nothing major, just a daft scratch that had me muttering "bloody typical" while reversing like a learner driver. Heart racing, I eventually popped out onto the main road, only five minutes late, but feeling like I'd auditioned for a Top Gear blooper reel.

Pulling up to Beech Cottages, though, all that palaver melted away faster than a Mr Whippy on a hot day. Tucked just on the edge of Conwy, these stone-built beauties are proper cosy – think low-beamed ceilings, flower baskets tumbling over the doorways, and that fresh country air laced with sea salt. Ours was the smaller one, Jegl, with a cheeky plaque that made me chuckle – perfect for a solo wanderer like me. The owner, a cheery local chap called Dai, was waiting with keys in hand, not a hint of "you look like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards." He handed over a welcome pack stuffed with local tea, biscuits, and a map scribbled with his top tips: "Mind the tide on the Morfa beach, love, and pop to the suspension bridge at dusk."

Stepping inside was like hugging a warm jumper. The living room's got this massive inglenook fireplace (unlit, sadly, as it was a balmy August afternoon), squishy sofas begging for a collapse, and French doors spilling out to a private patio. I dumped my bags and cracked open a window – bam, views straight across to the Conwy estuary, with boats bobbing and the castle's turrets peeking over the treeline. It's only a hop from the town walls, but feels worlds away, all peaceful with birdsong and the distant hum of the A470. Kitchen was a dream too: Belfast sink, Aga humming softly, and a fridge stocked with milk that was still cold from the farm down the road. I brewed a cuppa right away, slathered it with butter from the welcome pack, and flopped on the sofa, grinning like an idiot.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. That mirror mishap had me arriving in a flap, half-expecting the cottage to be a let-down to match my mood. But nah, Beech Cottages is the real deal – unpretentious, spotless, and screaming "relax here, you daft sod." I wandered the little garden patch, picking a few herbs for dinner, and nipped out for a five-minute stroll to the river path. The sun was dipping low, gilding the water, and Conwy's walls glowed pink against the sky. Sat there on a bench, munching a Welsh cake, I had one of those gentle "what am I rushing for?" moments. Work's been manic, life's a whirl, but this spot? It's a proper reset button. No grand adventures yet – that's for tomorrow – just the joy of arriving somewhere that feels like slipping into your favourite slippers. If you're after a base to soak up Conwy's charm without the tourist scrum, Beech Cottages nails it. Can't wait to see what day two brings, but right now, I'm sorted.
