About Conwy
I finally made it to Betws-y-Coed after what felt like the world's daftest detour – spilling half a thermos of builder's tea all over the M56 just as we hit the Welsh border. Picture this: me, swearing under my breath like a proper numpty, while the kids in the back giggle and my other half hands me wet wipes with that look that says, "Told you to use the lid." It was one of those insignificant mishaps that turns a three-hour drive into a proper comedy of errors, but by the time we trundled down the narrow lanes into the Conwy Valley, the sun was peeking through the clouds, and all was forgiven. We'd booked the 2 Bed Lodge in Betws-y-Coed for a cheeky three-day family break, craving that cosy Welsh escape without the faff of fancy hotels.

Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Nestled in a quiet spot just on the edge of the village, it's one of those timber-clad beauties that screams "get away from it all" – surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle whoosh of the River Llugwy nearby. We arrived mid-afternoon, bags tumbling out of the car like we'd been on the run, and the first impression? Pure bliss. The owner had left the key in a sneaky lockbox (cheers for that, no hanging about), and as I fumbled it open, the kids bolted straight for the decking area out back. "Mum, it's got a BBQ!" youngest one shrieked, eyes wide as saucers. Aye, it did – and a little hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting for us personally.

Stepping inside was even better. Compact but spot-on for us lot: two snug bedrooms upstairs, one with a double and the other with twins, all kitted out with fluffy duvets that practically begged you to flop down. Downstairs, the open-plan living space had a wood-burning stove (we didn't light it yet, but oh, the promise), a squishy sofa facing a telly that actually worked, and a kitchenette stocked with basics – kettle on the go before we'd even unpacked. I brewed a fresh cuppa (lesson learned from the thermos fiasco) and we all piled onto the sofa with biscuits, taking in the views through the big windows. Betws-y-Coed's wooded hills framed it all perfectly, like nature had rolled out the red carpet.

First impressions weren't all serene lodge life, mind. Chaos kicked in quick – toddler decided the lodge was his personal climbing frame, scaling the breakfast bar stool like a mini mountaineer, while we wrestled suitcases into the bedrooms. "This place is brilliant, but it's got us lot written all over it," I laughed to the missus, as a rogue sock flew across the room. We stepped out for a wander down to the village centre, just a short stroll away, grabbing fish and chips from a chippy that smelled like heaven. Sat on a bench by the River Conwy, munching away as the water rushed past – simple pleasures like that hit different on holiday. No schedules, no rush; just the three of us (well, four including the dog, who was in seventh heaven sniffing every blade of grass).

That evening, as the sun dipped behind the trees, we fired up the BBQ on the deck. Sausages sizzling, kids splashing in the hot tub (with supervision, obviously), and me reflecting quietly while flipping baps. These little getaways remind you what's important, don't they? Not the grand adventures, but these unhurried moments – tea spills, sock chaos, and all. The lodge wrapped us in that relaxed family vibe from the off, making our Conwy break feel like home, but better. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, this first day? Spot on.
