About Cardiff
I finally made it to Cabanau Bach after a bit of a faff on the train from London. Picture this: I'm lugging my weekend bag through Paddington, feeling all smug about my eco-friendly getaway, when some numpty spills a full latte right across my shoes just as the platform announcer calls my delayed service. By the time I hopped off at Cardiff Central, my trainers were a soggy, coffee-stained mess, and I was muttering about how even the universe was trying to caffeinate me against my will. Still, a quick taxi ride through the drizzly Cardiff streets – past the castle's brooding towers and the buzz of Westgate Street – and I was pulling up to this tucked-away gem in Caerphilly, just on the edge of the city.

Cabanau Bach is one of those proper Welsh hideaways, a cosy little lodge nestled in a quiet spot with Caerphilly Castle looming picturesquely nearby. From the moment I stepped through the gate, it was like the world hit the pause button. No grand arrivals or check-in dramas; just me, a cheery welcome note on the kitchen table, and a key that turned with a satisfying click. The place is tiny but perfect – think wooden beams, a squishy sofa by the fire, and a kitchenette stocked with tea bags and a kettle that whistles like it's auditioning for the Eisteddfod. I dumped my bag, kicked off the ruined shoes, and flopped onto the decking with a cuppa, gazing at the garden. It's not some manicured estate, just a wildish patch of green with bird feeders swaying in the breeze and the faint hum of local life in the distance. Bliss.

First impressions? Pure, unadulterated laziness. That's the joy of it, innit? After months of London hustle – deadlines, Tube crushes, the endless scroll – arriving here felt like sinking into a feather duvet. I spent that first afternoon doing bugger all except reading a battered copy of "Under Milk Wood" I'd packed on a whim. Curled up in the window nook, with rain pattering on the panes, I let Dylan's words wash over me. Every now and then, I'd wander out to the garden, plonking myself on the bench to watch robins squabble over seeds. No itinerary, no apps pinging reminders. Just me, a flask of tea, and the slow tick of the clock inside.

Come evening, I fancied a gentle potter – nothing strenuous, mind. A ten-minute amble took me to the castle grounds, where I mooched around the outer walls at dusk, the massive keep glowing under floodlights like something out of a fairy tale. Grabbed a pint and a bowl of cawl from a nearby pub, chatting idly with the barman about the rugby. Back at the lodge, I lit the fire (gas, thank heavens – no faffing with logs), cracked open a bottle of Brains SA, and sprawled out with a podcast. The cosiness was off the charts; that woodsy scent, the soft lighting, the way the lodge seemed to hug you in.

Day two dawned grey and lazy, perfect for more of the same. Breakfast was toast and marmalade on the decking, then a hammock session in the garden, swaying with a book while sheep bleated faintly from a nearby field. I reflected, mid-chapter, on how knackered I'd been feeling lately – proper burnout from chasing 'productivity'. Here, doing sod all felt revolutionary. A short stroll to the local shops for pasties and Welsh cakes, then back for tea and a nap. No grand adventures, just this gentle rhythm of slowing down, letting Cardiff's quiet side seep in.

By day three, I was hooked on the simplicity. Morning coffee in the garden, afternoon dozing by the fire, evening stargazing from the bench – Orion winking through the clouds. Cabanau Bach isn't about ticking boxes; it's a love letter to lounging, to reclaiming time for yourself. Leaving felt like waking from the best dream, coffee mishap and all. If you're after proper rest, this is your spot.
