About Barmouth
I finally made it to Barmouth after a bit of a faff on the A496 – nothing major, just me spilling half my takeaway coffee over the passenger seat about five miles out, turning my lap into a soggy mess. "Brilliant start," I muttered, dabbing at it with a service station napkin while the Snowdonia views rolled by. But honestly, who cares? I was here for three lazy days at the 3 Bed Lodge, tucked just a short stroll from Barmouth's sandy beach, and already the sea air was washing away any city stress.

Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's one of those proper Welsh gems – a cosy wooden-clad number with a pitched roof and flower tubs spilling over with geraniums, right in a quiet spot overlooking the Mawddach Estuary. The host handed over the keys with a cheery "Croeso!" and a nod to the private garden out back. I lugged my bag in, kicked off my trainers, and just... breathed. No itinerary, no rush. This was about doing bugger all, properly.

First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. The open-plan living area is all warm pine and squishy sofas, with a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening fire (though it was balmy enough to skip that). Big windows frame the estuary's sparkle – gulls wheeling, boats bobbing like they'd forgotten to go anywhere. The kitchen's kitted out for scoffing: a proper Aga-style cooker, telly on the wall for footie or whatever, and a dining table perfect for lingering over tea and Welsh cakes. Upstairs, three snug bedrooms – mine had a super-king bed piled with fluffy duvets that screamed "stay in it all day." Spotless loo with fluffy towels, too. No frills, just comfy as.

I dumped my stuff and headed straight for the garden – oh, what a spot. Fully enclosed with a patio, chiminea, and loungers under a pergola draped in vines. Facing south-ish, it catches the sun like a cat on a windowsill. I cracked open a book (some daft thriller I'd been ignoring for months), poured a GandT from the mini fridge, and flopped down. The joy of it! No deadlines, no notifications pinging. Just the hum of bees, distant waves crashing on the beach, and the odd dog walker ambling past. I must've sat there three hours, reading a chapter, dozing off, repeating. Felt like I'd earned a medal for mastering the art of nowt.

Wandering out later was pure amble mode. Barmouth's promenade is a five-minute dawdle away – that epic Victorian bridge over the railway, beach huts in candy colours, ice cream stalls wafting vanilla. I grabbed a 99 from a van, licked it slow while paddling barefoot in the shallows. The tide was out, revealing cockle shells and those wiggly sand patterns kids love. No hikes up Dinas Oleu or anything mad – just pottering along the harbour, watching fishing boats unload crab pots, chatting to a local about the best chippy (turns out it's the one by the station). Back at the lodge by tea, I rustled up pasta, ate on the patio as the sun dipped gold over the hills. Magic.

That first evening, staring at the sunset from the garden, I had a proper moment. Life's been a whirl lately – work, emails, the lot. Here, doing sweet FA felt revolutionary. No guilt, just contentment in the simple: a cosy nook, salty air, time stretching like toffee. If you're after slowing down in Barmouth, this lodge is your ticket. Can't wait to go back and perfect the art of lounging.
