I finally rolled into Barmouth after a bit of a faff on the A496, my little hatchback groaning under the weight of cool bags, beach toys, and enough snacks to feed a small army. We parked up on the gravel drive – no faff with permits here – and unloaded in a whirlwind of sandy feet and flung rucksacks. The key turned smooth as butter in the lock, and stepping inside felt like sinking into a hug.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on for our relaxed family break. The open-plan living area hit you straight away – compact but clever, with a squishy corner sofa piled high with cushions that screamed "loll about all day." The wood-burner was primed with a complimentary basket of logs (cheers for that, owners!), and the telly was a smart one with Freeview for kids' shows when the Welsh weather turned moody. Kitchen was a doddle: granite tops, a proper farmhouse sink, and all the kit you'd need for whipping up fish fingers or a cheeky fry-up. I clocked the Nespresso pod machine immediately – hero status unlocked for caffeine fiends like me.

Up the creaky wooden stairs (adding to the lodge charm), the two bedrooms were pure bliss. Ours had a king-sized bed that looked like it could swallow you whole, crisp white duvets, and a window framing the estuary's gentle lap. The kids' room was a riot of bunk bed fun, complete with a trundle for when they inevitably wanted a "camp-in." En-suite was compact but lush – rainfall shower that rinsed off the road grime in seconds, fluffy towels, and those posh little soaps that don't smell like lavender bomb.

We dumped the bags and cracked on with settling in, the kids immediately commandeering the garden patio for a game of chase around the picnic bench. That first brew in hand, I wandered out to take it all in: the lodge's private hot tub bubbling away invitingly (filled and heated, thank goodness – no waiting around), fringed by hedges buzzing with bees. Beyond, you could hear the distant whoosh of waves on Barmouth beach, just a ten-minute stroll away. No cars needed; it was all about pottering local, grabbing an ice cream from the parade or paddling in the shallows come low tide.

As the sun dipped low, painting the hills gold, we fired up the BBQ – coals provided, naturally – and charred some bangers while the kids splashed in their (slightly deflated) paddling pool. Sat there with a cold lager, watching them giggle, I had one of those quiet moments. Life's mad rush back home feels miles away in a place like this. Here, it's the simple stuff – the lodge's warm glow against the dusk, the estuary's hush, a bit of family mayhem – that recharges the batteries.
