About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive to The Cabin in Amlwch, Anglesey – a proper Welsh adventure that started with me forgetting to fill up the tank just outside Bangor. There we were, me, the wife, and our two lads aged eight and ten, chugging along the A55 with the sat-nav chirping away like it owned the place. “Low fuel,” it warns, and sure enough, we’re limping into a tiny petrol station near Llanfairpwll, the pump nozzle refusing to play ball because I’d picked the wrong side. Cue ten minutes of faffing about with the car in the narrow forecourt, horns beeping from impatient locals, while the kids chant “Daddy’s lost his petrol privileges!” from the back seat. Classic me – turning a 90-minute journey into a full-blown comedy sketch. But hey, we made it, petrol topped up, and as we veered off onto the winding coastal roads towards Amlwch Port, the stress melted away like ice cream on a hot day.

Pulling up to The Cabin around teatime on that drizzly Friday, I was hit with that instant “this is the one” feeling. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Amlwch, it’s this cosy wooden lodge that screams “get away from it all” without being pretentious. Picture a smart little haven with a veranda overlooking open fields rolling down to the sea – not a soul in sight, just the distant crash of waves on Burro Head and the odd seagull squawking overhead. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, kids already racing about like feral puppies, and I fumbled the key safe code twice before the door swung open to reveal a warm, welcoming interior. Woodburner ready with logs stacked neatly, plush sofas begging for a collapse, and a kitchen that’s compact but kitted out with everything from cafetière to quirky Anglesey gin glasses. First impressions? Blissful lodge life, the kind where you kick off your shoes and feel the world shrink to this perfect bubble.

No sooner had we unpacked than chaos erupted – the relaxed family break vibe in full swing. The boys discovered the board games stash and turned the lounge into a battlefield of exploding kittens and toppled Jenga towers, while I wrestled with the fancy kettle that hissed like a steam train. Wife sorted supper – fish and chips from the chippy in Amlwch Port, just a five-minute drive away, still crispy and steaming as we scoffed them on the veranda. The sun dipped low over the Irish Sea, painting everything golden, and we spotted seals bobbing about near the rocks. “Look, Dad, they’re waving!” yelled little Jack, which had us all in stitches. That first evening, we lit the woodburner (after I nearly singed my eyebrows faffing with the kindling), cracked open some local ales, and just... breathed. No schedules, no screens pinging – pure simple pleasure.

Wandering down to the nearby beach the next morning felt like stepping into a secret. Barely a ten-minute stroll from The Cabin, it’s this rugged stretch of Porth Wen bricks and pebbly shore, with the tide pools glittering under a rare blue sky. The lads paddled about, hunting for crabs with makeshift nets from driftwood, while I skimmed stones and pondered how knackered I always feel back home in the grind. Here, though, with the salt air whipping my hair and the wife snapping pics, I had this gentle moment of reflection: when did we last just muck about without a care? The Cabin magic was working already – that unhurried pace where spilling tea on the sofa doesn’t matter, and lodge life chaos (like the boys’ epic mud-trail from beach to door) just adds to the fun.

By day two’s end, first impressions had sealed it: The Cabin’s our go-to for Anglesey escapes. That insignificant petrol palaver? Forgotten amid the laughter, the sea views, and the sheer joy of unplugging. If you fancy a slice of Welsh coastal calm with a side of family mayhem, this is your spot. Can’t wait to go back.
