About Anglesey
I finally made it to Porthwen Lodge near Amlwch after a bit of a faff on the road from the mainland. The drive across the Menai Bridge was glorious under a proper Anglesey sky—all fluffy clouds and that endless sea sparkle—but then, wouldn't you know it, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had me convinced I'd end up in a cow field. Classic me, relying on sat-nav like it's gospel, only for it to lead me into a puddle deep enough to give the car a bath. A quick reverse and a sheepish wave to a passing farmer (who probably sees this daily), and I was back on track, laughing at my own daftness.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in its own little world just outside Amlwch, with views straight out to the bay, it's the sort of place that whispers "relax, will you?" from the moment you step out. The garden's a riot of wildflowers and lavender, buzzing with bees, and that big picture window frames the sea like a living painting. I dumped my bags, kicked off my trainers, and just... breathed. After months of rushing about, it hit me: this was exactly what I needed, a three-day prescription for doing bugger all.

First impressions? Cosy as a Welsh blanket. The open-plan living space is all low beams, a wood-burner begging for a lazy evening (though it was balmy enough to skip that), and a kitchen stocked with everything from fresh Anglesey teabags to a proper cafetière for my morning ritual. I cracked open a window, let the salty breeze wander in, and plonked myself on the squishy sofa with a dog-eared copy of some seaside thriller I'd been meaning to read for ages. No agenda, no timetable—just the tick of a clock that's finally on my side.

That first evening, I pottered about the garden like a man with nowhere to be (because I didn't). The sun dipped low over Porthwen Beach, just a short stroll away, turning the rocks golden. I wandered down there barefoot, skimmed a few stones across the calm bay, and watched seals bob about in the distance—proper lazy wildlife spotting, no binoculars required. Back at the lodge, I rustled up a simple supper of local cheddar on toast (nabbed from the Amlwch Co-op on the way), paired with a cheeky glass of Welsh red. Sat there in the fading light, feet up, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection: life's too short for constant hustle. Why had I waited so long to find this pocket of peace?

Day two dawned misty, perfect for more of the same. I lingered over brekkie—porridge with honey from the garden bees, if you can imagine—then sprawled in a hammock with my book, dozing off to the lap of waves. Mid-morning, fancying a bit of "exploration," I ambled along the coastal path to nearby Bull Bay. It's barely a mile, all rugged cliffs and rock pools teeming with crabs. I poked about for an hour, chuckling at my failed attempt to catch a blenny (they're slippery little buggers), then headed back for tea and biscuits on the patio. No grand adventures, just that slow-burn joy of savouring the now.

By day three, I'd fully surrendered to the lodge's magic. Reading turned into napping, napping into gazing at gulls wheeling overhead. A gentle wander to the secluded cove below the garden yielded nothing but peace—no crowds, just me, the tide, and the thrill of achieving precisely nowt. Leaving felt wrong, like abandoning a good mate mid-chat. Porthwen Lodge isn't about ticking boxes; it's about finally switching off. If you're knackered from the daily grind, book it. Trust me, you'll thank me later.
