About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive to Glanrafon Lodge in Anglesey – a proper Welsh adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn near Llanfairpwll and ending up in a queue of caravans crawling along the A55 like it was auditioning for a traffic jam documentary. It was one of those daft mishaps where you laugh it off because, honestly, who needs sat-nav when you’ve got optimism and a half-full tank of petrol? By the time we rolled into Marianglas, the sun was dipping low over Traeth Bychan beach, painting everything golden, and my other half was threatening to hide my phone for the rest of the trip. Classic family holiday start.

Pulling up to Glanrafon Lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just off the lane in Llaneugrad, it’s one of those cosy lodges that screams “relax and forget the world”. We’d booked it for a three-day breather, me, the missus, and our two lads, aged eight and ten, who were already buzzing like they’d mainlined Irn-Bru. The place is proper homely – think wooden beams, a cracking wood-burning stove (which we hadn’t lit yet, but eyed up greedily), and a kitchen that’s small but mighty, stocked with everything you need for a fry-up. Outside, there’s a decent garden with views that stretch to the sea on a clear day, and a patio perfect for kicking back with a cuppa. First impressions? Blissful. No blaring telly ads or neighbourly chit-chat – just the sound of waves in the distance and the odd seagull having a right old chinwag.

We dumped the bags and let the chaos unfold, because what’s a lodge holiday without a bit of joyful pandemonium? The boys made a beeline for the garden, turning it into their personal football pitch within seconds. One rogue shot sent the ball pinging off the fence and straight into a bush, sparking a full-on rescue mission involving sticks, torches (it was getting dusky), and me on my hands and knees like a daft dad in a sitcom. “It’s only a ball,” I huffed, emerging covered in twigs, while they howled with laughter. That’s lodge life for you – simple pleasures laced with a touch of madness. We eventually corralled them inside for fish fingers and beans, scoffing round the table as the kettle whistled away. The lodge’s vibe is spot-on for this: compact enough to feel intimate, but with space to sprawl without tripping over each other.

Stepping out for that first evening wander was pure magic. Marianglas is right on the doorstep, with its shingle beach just a short stroll away – we ambled down as the tide whispered in, picking up wonky shells and skimping stones that the lads turned into an impromptu competition. “Mine skipped five times!” yelled the youngest, though I reckon it was more like two and a half. The air’s so fresh it slaps you awake, laced with that salty tang that makes you breathe deeper. Back at the lodge, we cracked open a bottle of plonk (non-alcoholic squash for the nippers) and toasted our arrival on the patio, watching the sky turn from pink to purple. No grand plans, no rushing – just us, soaking in the quiet rhythm of Anglesey coast life.

Sitting there later, mug in hand, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here at Glanrafon, it all fades. It’s the little things – the creak of the floorboards, the way the sea breeze rustles the curtains – that remind you what matters. We’d only just arrived, but already I was plotting how to stretch this three-day escape into a lifetime habit. If you’re after a relaxed family bolt-hole where the highlights are muddy knees, beachcombing, and zero agenda, this is it. Anglesey’s got that pull, and Glanrafon Lodge? It’s the perfect perch. Can’t wait to go back – ball rescue missions and all.
