Pentraeth is a charming village on the River Nodwydd's banks on Anglesey's north-east coast. Featuring a 12th-century church, it's between Llanddona beach and Red Wharf Bay—Traeth Coch—with 4.5 miles of sandy shore, safe shallow waters for bathing, fishing and walks, plus glorious sunsets and abundant birds like shelduck, curlew and oystercatchers. Nearby, medieval Beaumaris offers a 13th-century castle, shops, pubs, eateries, museums, golf and boat trips. Six minutes from Britannia Bridge to the mainland.

About Anglesey
I finally made it to Fron Goch Shepherd's Hut in Pentraeth, Anglesey, after a drive that was equal parts scenic and sodding infuriating. Picture this: I'd left the mainland early, buzzing with excitement for my three-day solo getaway in this cosy little spot nestled among the Welsh countryside. The A55 was a dream at first—rolling hills, glimpses of the Menai Strait sparkling under the sun—but then, just past Llanfairpwll, I hit the classic Anglesey roadworks trap. You know the one, where a simple lane closure turns a 20-minute jaunt into a 45-minute crawl behind a lorry spewing gravel. And to top it off, in my haste to beat the queue, I'd chucked my phone charger into the boot without a second thought. By the time I turned off onto the narrow lanes towards Pentraeth, my sat nav was gasping its last at 2% battery, leaving me squinting at faded signs and second-guessing every left turn. Chaos? Absolutely. But hey, that's half the fun of a proper Welsh adventure, innit?

Pulling up to Fron Goch felt like stumbling into a hidden gem after that palaver. The shepherd's hut sits in a peaceful field just outside the village, surrounded by lush green pastures dotted with sheep—proper woolly locals eyeing me suspiciously as I wrestled my bag out of the car. I half-expected the battery-death nav to have led me astray, but no, there it was: a pint-sized wooden haven on wheels, all rustic charm with a fresh lick of paint and a little veranda begging for a cuppa. The key was tucked under a flowerpot (classic), and as I pushed open the door, the first impression hit me like a warm hug. Inside, it was compact perfection— a double bed piled high with crisp white duvets, a teeny kitchenette gleaming with everything you'd need for a fry-up, and a wood-burning stove that promised toasty nights. Sunlight streamed through the skylight, bouncing off the fairy lights strung along the walls. I plonked myself on the edge of the bed, exhaled, and thought, "Blimey, after that drive, this is exactly what the doctor ordered."

Stepping back outside, the real magic unfolded. The hut's position is spot-on—close enough to Pentraeth for a quick wander to the local shop for milk and Welsh cakes, but far enough to feel utterly secluded. I could hear the distant crash of waves from Red Wharf Bay, just a couple of miles down the road, and the air smelled of sea salt mixed with wildflowers. That insignificant mishap with the charger? Forgotten already as I fired up the outdoor pizza oven (a cracking feature, by the way) and rustled up a cheeky cheese toastie with what I'd packed. Sat on the veranda with my feet up, watching the sun dip towards the horizon, I couldn't help but chuckle at myself. Here I was, a city lad who'd spent the journey cursing every pothole, now grinning like an idiot at a flock of lambs doing zoomies in the field next door. Light humour in the absurdity: I'd planned this as a chill reset, yet arrived in a flap worthy of a sitcom.

As the evening light faded, I lit the stove and cracked open a book, the hut's gentle creaks settling around me like an old friend. That first evening brought a quiet moment of self-reflection—staring out at the Anglesey twilight, I realised how often I barrel through life without pausing. The drive's little drama was a reminder: sometimes the mess gets you to the good stuff. Fron Goch didn't just look idyllic; it felt like it, wrapping me in simple, soul-soothing vibes from the off. If you're after first impressions that stick, this shepherd's hut delivers in spades—chaotic arrival and all. Can't wait to see what day two brings.
