About Anglesey
Pulling up to Forest Lodge just as dusk was creeping in felt like stumbling into a proper hug from nature. Tucked away in a wooded spot near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, it's one of those cosy stone cottages that screams "get away from it all." The autumn season had worked its magic here – the surrounding trees were a riot of orange and amber, shedding leaves that crunched underfoot like nature's own autumnal crisps. I parked on the gravel drive, grabbed my bags, and fumbled the key in the lock, half-expecting a family of squirrels to scamper out. Inside, the first impression hit like a warm toddy: a wood-burning stove already laid with kindling (bless the hosts), plush sofas begging for a collapse, and a kitchen that smelled faintly of fresh bread from whoever prepped it. Outside, through the patio doors, the garden sloped gently into the woods, alive with the rustle of falling leaves and that earthy, damp scent you only get when summer's properly packed up. Unpacking took about five minutes because, let's face it, who needs more than a jumper, wellies, and a flask for a three-day jaunt? I cracked open the bifold doors to let in the cool air – proper fresh, that sea-tinged breeze wafting up from the nearby strait. Anglesey's got this wild, untamed edge in autumn, doesn't it? No crowds clogging the paths, just you, the wind, and the occasional lowing of sheep from the fields beyond the trees. I stepped out for a wander around the garden, boots sinking into the mossy grass, and spotted a carpet of fungi popping up like little umbrellas after the morning's mist. Hilarious, really – I nearly slipped on a slick pile of leaves trying to snap a photo, ending up flat on my arse with mud on my jeans. Laughed it off solo, of course, because nothing says "holiday vibes" like a self-inflicted mud bath. That first evening, as the light faded to a moody twilight, I lit the stove and brewed a pot of tea. The flames danced, casting flickering shadows on the beams, and I sat there with the windows cracked, listening to the woods settle. Autumn amps up the cosiness of a place like this tenfold – it's not just the chill outside that makes the indoors irresistible, but the way the season wraps everything in this nostalgic glow. Made me pause for a moment, mug in hand, thinking about how I never slow down back home. Work emails pinging away, life's rush – here, with the leaves swirling past like confetti from a forgotten party, it all felt miles away. Forest Lodge nailed that first-night magic: intimate, unpretentious, and perfectly pitched for autumn's moody charm. Brewing up some soup from the veg basket left in the fridge – carrots and leeks that tasted like they'd been pulled from a local plot – I glanced at the map on the wall. Tomorrow's explorations would wait, but already, those initial impressions had me hooked. The seasonal shift turned a simple cottage stay into something poetic, all crisp air and glowing sunsets filtering through the canopy. If you're chasing that proper Welsh autumn escape within spitting distance of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll's high street, this is your spot. Can't wait to share more, but honestly, that arrival alone was worth the drive. |
