About Anglesey
I finally made it to Anglesey after a bit of a faff on the road from the mainland. The A55 was its usual chaotic self—holiday traffic crawling along like a queue at the post office—but the real comedy came when I stopped at a services near Bangor for a quick pasty and managed to spill half my builder's tea right down my shirt. Proper muppet moment, steaming and sticky all the way to Holyhead. Still, by the time I turned off onto the winding lanes towards Cwt Y Rhos, the sea air was already working its magic, and I was buzzing for my three-day escape.

Pulling up to the cottage, I was chuffed to bits. It's this cosy little stone number tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Holyhead, with views peeking over to the cliffs and the Irish Sea lapping not far off. The owner had left a welcoming note on the door with fresh eggs from their hens and a loaf of bara brith still warm from the oven—proper thoughtful touch. I dumped my bags, kicked off my trainers, and headed straight for the kitchen. That first rummage through the cupboards felt like Christmas: well-stocked with pots, a cracking Aga-style cooker, and even some local spices. No faffing about with takeaways for me; I was determined to channel my inner MasterChef Wales.

First impressions? The place screamed proper home-from-home, perfect for pottering about with foodie experiments. I'd clocked a farmers' market in Holyhead on the way over—tiny but brilliant, just a five-minute drive. Popped down there that first afternoon, basket in hand, and loaded up on Anglesey goodies: salty black beef from a nearby farm, plump cockles straight from the Menai Strait, and a wedge of Perl Las cheese that could make you weep with joy. The stallholders were dead chatty, swapping tips on how to steam the cockles without turning them to rubber. Bargain at a fiver for a massive punnet.

Back at Cwt Y Rhos, I fired up the cooker for my grand arrival feast. Started simple with a cockle chowder—chucked in spuds from the market, cream from the local dairy, and a splash of that sea-salty broth. It bubbled away merrily, filling the cottage with smells that had my stomach rumbling like a tractor. Paired it with doorstep bread slathered in laverbread butter (that Welsh seaweed stuff—acquired taste, but I was hooked). Sat out on the patio as the sun dipped, spooning it up with a cold local Rhosybol ale I'd grabbed en route. Bliss. Only hitch was when I overdid the garlic—woke up with breath like a dragon the next morning, but worth it.

Evening called for the pub crawl—well, more of a gentle amble, since everything's spitting distance. First stop: the Holland Arms, a classic Holyhead boozer not five minutes away. Proper Anglesey hospitality—landlord poured me a pint of local cwrw and a plate of faggots with mushy peas that were spot-on, gravy rich as anything. Chatted with a couple of locals about the best chippy (turns out it's the one down by the marina), and they reckoned Cwt Y Rhos was a gem for self-caterers. Back at the cottage, I fancied another go: attempted Welsh rarebit with that Perl Las, toasting it under the grill till gooey. Nearly set off the smoke alarm—lesson learned, don't multitask with the telly—but it turned out golden and moreish, scoffed with pickle from the market.

That first full day wrapped with a reflective pint on the cottage sofa, staring out at the waves. Amid the food frenzy, I realised I'd been rushing meals back home, wolfing down rubbish between jobs. Here, cooking became a proper unwind—chopping, stirring, savouring. No wonder Anglesey folk take their grub so seriously; it's the heartbeat of the place. Can't wait to see what culinary disasters (or triumphs) the next days bring at Cwt Y Rhos.
